Has anyone installed a 15 - 50 Micron fuel filter after the pump and before the carburetors on a ferari carb car - like a 308? I am thinking of going with a 35 micron filter, been having problems with my idle jets clogging and i wonder if i install this type of filter, will the stock ferrari fuel pump provide enough pressure and flow after the filter.....
    thanks

I have no experience with fuel filters, but sell water filter filtration systems for medical equipment, and you will need something with much greater capacity if you don't want to induce some sort of restriction. The smaller the particle size the faster it will clog unless you go with more media. Not sure what most fuel filters are, but 35 micron seems pretty large to me. If you are going to the trouble, I would go smaller.

BTW, I never had problems with my previous 78 308GTS using the stock fuel filter. What brand filter are you currently using? Are you sure the clogging is not caused by some other source?

    HI Dave
thanks for the input. most of the fuel injection systems use a 15 micron filter, perhaps i will go with that, but i dont know if the low pressure ferrari fuel pump in the 308 can handle it, or even the 35 micron for that matter. i replaced the stock filter at the pump, but thinking of replacing the inline filter after the pump with the micron type. looks like small debris is getting into the idle jet orifices, and i occassionally have to blow compressed air thru the circuit, but it always comes back.

When was the inline filter last replaced? Is it of good quality?

Dunno if this will help but I'll throw it out...

I am using this Perma-Cool fuel filter from <gasp!> J.C. Whitney on my carbed, air-cooled engine. The mechanical fuel pump is a puller so fuel goes from the tank -> filter -> pump -> to carbs. It has a petcock on the bottom to drain it, mostly for water as it does separate the water from the fuel (the car is no longer a daily driver). Not sure if this link will work: http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/ItemBrowse/c-10114/s-10101/p-100000212270/mediaCode-ZX/appId-100000212270/Pr-p_CATENTRY_ID:100000212270

I've had no issues with it and it works great! I have a clear fuel filter before my mechanic fuel pump that I use as a "fuel is present" indicator. That filter is still new looking inside, indicating the Perma-Cool filter is doing its job. I've already logged enough miles on the engine that I'm on my second cartridge. I've driven to Canada several times in the car (i.e. long distance) and the engine is not stock nor cheap, being a bored and stroked 2007cc stump-puller (as far as old-school VW station wagens are concerned ;) LOL).
