yeah - I'm with you. 25 years of Windows O/S and they haven't figured this out yet?! duhh Was using Diskeeper for a bit, and that helped. may go back. I was shocked how much more defrag'ing my Windows Media Center machine needed when it was in use. Not sure why this would be a surprise to the 'softies in Redmond, that there'd be large files being added and removed. Now Outlook exacerbates it even more. I'm read some of the propaganda, that Vista works better with Search and Outlook '07 than XP. But I'm not brave enough to try it yet on anything without 18GHz of cpu and 8GB of RAM, so not any of my laptops yet
Diskeeper is decent, but it trades thoroughness for speed, a handy trade off. I don't use outlook, but search in Vista actually works. It's FAST. The only downside is that I need a server farm to generate and host the index file.
How do you guys compare it to O&O? I gave up on defragging drives automatically. Now I just run windows defragger every few months on the computers whenever I'm in the office. I don't even know if it makes a difference, the systems are all RAID 1'ed. To be honest, I can't wait until Ubuntu and it's friends (applications specifically, Peachtree replacement + Outlook replacement) are mature enough that I can replace the Win-boxes. I like the flexbility in where I can choose whatever filesystem I want and deselect the stuff I don't want (Gentoo cough cough).
O&O is better than DK because it is more thorough, but it is a *lot* slower at what it does; it's about the same speed at the built-in defrag.
There is a patch for prior office versions that will let them read the new .docx and .xlsx format available from microsoft's office website.
I'm glad this subject was broached today, as a coworker (yes, she actually works) posed a question to me re: Vista/Outlook. She said unlike Outlook Express which she'd always used quite painlessly, she is unable to use Microsoft Outlook at all, as it requires her to enter a 25-digit product key number. Is said number the same as one would normally find on the Windows Install disc (even if it's preinstalled) *or* if unable for whatever reason, would she be wise to go the the Microsoft Update page to rectify the situation?
Yup. Outlook is a part of the office suite. Outlook express is a part of windows OS. And is also available free from microsoft as a part of IE, I think. sooo.... no code for express, yes code for outlook. DM
