^^^ Sounds like the Saturn business model. Hope the second time is the charm.
I can. Shorten the WB and make a 2 seater from a 2+2. Given the Vette has a plastic body, the tooling wouldn't be a lot to make an entire new car from the massive investment of a new Camaro. Make them share engine and drivetrain compenents (or slightly modify them) Think of the advantage to GM. They are free to move upmarket with the ME (the real growth in the market now is $90K - $150K) and still keep their loyal $55K customers happy. What would be interesting (and I think coming next) is the Mustang taking a similar approach -- like a Mustang pure sports car 2 seater and a Mustang SUV. If Corvette can be its own brand why can't the Mustang too? You don't think some guys who need to buy an SUV for the family wouldn't love a Mustang SUV? You bet they would -- just like they buy BMW SUV's that never go off road. If GM takes this approach its really not much different than what Alfa did through the 60's and 70's. Share platforms and engines between different vehicles from sports cars, sports sedans, and GT's.
It does confirm what I have been thinking for awhile...that GM will not give up the front engine platform. There is too much history there
Chevy already has Camaros priced well into Vette territory, so my prediction is the higher-end Camaros remain as Camaros and fill the void left by the ME Vette. The Camaro 2SS 1LE, which doesn't cost too much less than a base Vette ($50k), puts out very similar performance numbers. Building a "Vette" off a Camaro platform would be marketing loser from the word go. If people think the FE Vette faithful won't buy a ME Vette, then they're sure not buying a Camaro in drag.
So when Chevy introduced the C7, they gave a marketing rational WHY they didn't go ME. And the main reason was cost to the consumer. They calculated that for every 10K more in price, they would lose "X" potential customers. They need Bowling Green to crank out so many cars a year or it becomes unprofitable to maintain. No BG, probably no more Corvette. So they really worked hard to make the C7 start under $60K. GM knows it's customers way better than we do. Its all dollars and cents to them. Having an ME and and FE means they get the best of both worlds, just like Porsche has 2 two seat sports cars in their line up. My guess is if the base is 77K, few buyers will drive one home less than $90K
I’m confused...there would be a “Chevy Corvette” the (C8), and a separate brand called a Corvette (ME, SUV, etc.)??
if what Bob posted is true it makes the most sense. I also have been saying they would be nuts to give up the FE car. thats what corvette buys want. the ME will appeal to a different set of buyers. Sharing Camaro platform makes perfect sense to me.
what i got out of it is Corvette becomes a brand and will have a FE C8, ME Zora and a suv. chevy would make a killing w a corvette suv.
Would they be sold at Chevy dealers or will they set up a new dealer network (Saturn?). One benefit of Chevy or Ford is ready access to tons of local dealers. Saw the post from @energy88 re Saturn. They have lots of work if launching a new brand next year.
I just lurked a bit over there. Apparently, that thread you quoted was taken down because the OP admitted it was a joke.
Conspiracy theory number 101,493--- Take down a leaked post and claim it's "a joke". Hey who really knows. Its fun to talk about though.
Yes indeed. The old double negative conspiracy theory. Post it....claim it was a joke....get it deleted...."hmmm..maybe it IS true" The boys at Corvette Forum are getting so antsy they're doing anything to keep themselves amused. The one part of the thread I'm starting to believe is that the car is going to intro in New York in March 2019 rather than Detroit in January 2019. The really funny part of The Mayor's thread copy from Corvette Forum is that it got taken down, and before any explanation was offered, someone started a NEW thread stating that GM had asked Corvette Forum to take it down. That, of course, is not what happened but it is funny how some folks find a conspiracy in ANYTHING, even the new Corvette.
What's interesting is the guy who made the post was his first post on the Vette forum. So, why would someone want to join and then create a prank post (that actually has a lot of pretty accurate info in it so he clearly knows what he's talking about) just for the fun of it? Seems bizarre. But hey, people will do anything for some attention. There have been other fake postings in the C8 section before. But this one is pretty unusual and was taken down in a matter of hours.
Hey John.... Give it up, man. WHEN???? Or is this: "I'd like to tell you, but then I'd have to kill you..."
John is a Detroit homie. I think it would be more like : "If I tell you, I will get to meet Jimmy Hoffa!"
