My main car (99 Camry) was parked on the street at my fiancee's house last night. Her dad woke us up at 1:15 this morning with a, "Mike's car is totalled."

Apparently, some ******* in a gigantic pickup truck slammed into the back of my car, pushing it about 20 feet forward. It doesn't even look like he braked; he must have stopped because of the impact. He then backed up and in trying to go around the car, smashed into it again. The neighbors saw it out the window and called the cops. The guy took off and the police have yet to find him.

I have basically no back end of my car now. The entire trunk was pushed into the back seat. Since I'm a computer consultant and travel quite a bit, I had a TON of computer equipment in the trunk... all destroyed.

    What a mess.

I've got to talk to the insurance adjuster on Monday (already filed the claim). If its totalled, obviously I'll get a new car. If the insurance company decides to fix it, though, I don't know whether to trade it in since there was so much damage. I was really calm last night, but now I'm starting to stress about everything... getting a rental, whether or not I need a new car, what the insurance company's going to do, how long this whole ordeal will take. I hope the cops find the guy. I hope he goes to jail, but I know he won't.

    :(

That's terrible. At least no one was hurt, well except for the guy that did it, if he's hurt who the hell cares. Hopefully the police will get him.

Chances are very great the guy was drunk. This is a serious crime, DUI and a hit and run. They should be able to find him. If you're really serious about finding him you may want to contact the media and get the word out. Sorry for the unfortunate incident. It makes me think twice about where I park my car at night.

I know how frustrating that is. I would bet that they'll find the guy eventually. Same thing happened to my wife's car a few months ago, only nobody witnessed it. It was obviously a yellow taxi that hit it, due to the color and the Ford Crown Victoria blinker pieces all over, but there was nothing we could do. Good luck...

This happened to one of my subcontractor's large trailers one night. It was a dual axle loaded up with debris and some drunk rammed it and shoved it down the road. When the sub showed up at 6:00 a.m. in the morning he called the cops. The guys SUV that hit it left a trail of anitfreeze and oil down the street, around the corner, and right up his driveway and into his garage.
My sub walked with the cops to the guy's door and they knocked. When the guy answers he's still drunk and has a big bruise on his face. Of course the first thing he says, before the cops even ask him anything, is "I didn't do it!"

Sadly my roomate's car suffered the same fate a couple of weeks ago. His is still driveable, and insurance is fixing it, but they haven't caught the guy yet. He left a huge chunk of his bumper on the street there, I saw a car with a matching piece of bumper missing the next night on our street, and got the plate. The cops said "all we can do is ask him if he did it". What happened to actually doing police work? Taking the piece of bumper we saved over there to see if it matched would take like 30 seconds but no, that would be too much to ask. Oh well, just makes me wonder about the police.. I am sure they have more important things to do, but wouldn't it be nice if they took one of those speed trap or parking meter people and let them stop impeding progress and start helping it. Sorry, a little venting there. More of my anger goes at the dirtbag that hit the car and didn't stop. That has to be the worst thing ever, at least a note. I guess my mother and father raised an honest son or something, what the hell is wrong with me. OK, thats enough.

One time I needed the police for something and they seemed less than interested. I called a friend in the DA's office and they called the cops and got some real action. I would talk to someone in the DA's office and ask if they would prosecute the guy that did this and tell them you have a bumper that could be matched up but tell them the police don't want to try. They could get someone out there that will. The DA's office may have their own detectives/investigators that will come out go look at the other guys car with you piece of bumper. It's worth a try.

Same thing happened to a friend of mine about a year ago. His BMW was parked on the street and got completely totalled by a drunk driver. I don't think the guy ran though. Insurance took care of it too. So, in the end, it didn't work out too bad for him, as his parents bought him a Saab convertible. But, if the guy ran and the police can't find him, you may have a bit harder time.
