Joplin is a city of 50k people. 3/4 of the town is now reduced to rubble. This sort of thing makes you think about what really is important, and what is not...

devastating, prayers for the city of Joplin. my dad lived there for a while as a kid (in the mid 50s).

how does a city that size cope when the hospital gets hit by a tornado? National Guard/Red Cross triage tent?

You can watch it form here (audio is very loud). I read this morning it was on the ground for 6 miles and 1/2 mile wide.

This is a first person video going through it. Very scary.

IIRC there are two hospitals in town, one was undamaged. An hour away Springfield MO is a bigger city and has three bigger hospitals. As I understand it most patients have been sent there.

The death toll of 89 was from a pre-dawn press conference early this morning. With 2000+ buildings destroyed it would have been impossible to have searched them all in the middle of the night (it stormed most of the night in this area). I would expect the death toll to be revised later today. Very sad.

Currently storming here with more severe thunderstorms this afternoon.
