I'm going to drive up to Virginia (I'm located in Florda) to check out a white '89 Testarossa with 23k miles. The 30k mile service was already performed on that car. It is white with tan interior and, according to the seller is in excellent shape with no scratches dents and no accidents etc.
Now I have a few questions:

    1) what is the value of that car?

    2) Is there anything specific to look for when inspecting the car?

I personally had 10 Corvettes so far (2 right now) but never owned a Ferrari, so I'm pretty new to Ferraris.

I also wonder how easy or difficult are those cars to work on. I usually do my own work on my Corvettes but I wonder if that's not something that i should consider if I'd own a Ferrari?

    Thanks in advance!

I would say that car sould sell for somewhere in the neighborhood of 60,000-70,000 depending on the actual condition and what they consider great shape. I don't know how hard it is to work on the Testarossa, but i can tell you the parts will be very expensive.

The seller is asking less than that price range for the car. I'm aware that parts will be expensive... (probably 10 times the cost of Corvette parts...).
I know a guy who ownes a Vette and s 308 Ferrari and he does all his own work on the Ferrari, but the 308 is quite different from a Testarossa...
Well, if I end up buying the car, I'll get some maintanance/service manuals and will see if it's something that I could do myself... On my '68 Vette, a engine swap takes me about 3 - 4 hours... :D

    When was the service done?

Other than that, make sure everything works (even the clock), check for the recall on the seatbelts (I think that was a 1989 issue), check for smoke (some on startup is okay).

The service was done in 2004, about 700 miles ago..
How can I verify if the recall issue was fixed?
I'll check for smoke.. That's one of the first things that I check on any car...

Well, it's actually for sale for $47999 and that price almost seems to good to be true and that's why I'm cautious.. Sometimes deals that are too good to be true aren't true...

Service is more or less current then. Cool.

Check for paperwork on it. I think the '89s had the mickey mouse belts. Make sure they work (it is an expensive fix if they don't).

Don't be surprised by a small puff of smoke at startup. Search the site for TR buying guide info, it should be well documented.

    Good luck.

I am interested to know how your tr purchase turns out.
I hope the white tr is as great as advertised and meet your expectation.
i too am in search of a tr but haven't found the right one yet.
i was so close to buying one, (even scheduled ppi for it) but could not get over the high mileage of 48k. the seller offered it to me for $49k.
i once read a quote on here not too long ago that i will remember for rest of my ferrari lover life. "purchase time is not the time to be thrifty"
hope you get a great horse!

I like the 328's but the Testarossa has always been my dream car.. When I was a kid, I was drooling over those cars when they started making them but I never thought that I would ever be able to afford one.. A career and some great Real Estate investments later, I can now easily afford one and now I got to have one :D
Gonna have to make space in the garage though and one of my Vettes will have to go...

As all the guys mentioned above, service work receipts, accidents, seat belts, etc.

I too saw that car as I am thinking of adding a TR to the stable. The price makes me scared. Could be a great car with an owner who needs to sell quickly. $10k lower than some with 50k miles though makes me think somehting is up? Maybe not???

I would take her to a qualified, non bias, Ferrari tech at a deealer for a comprhensive PPI. That is a must

Good Luck and let us know how it turns out?

    Mike

Thanks!! I'll keep you updated... I might fly into Washington with a red eye flight tomorrow morning and then take a rental car and drive down to Richmond.. Couldn't find any decent flights into Richmond without staying overnight.. The flight that I found into Washington arrives at 8 AM and the return flight is at 10 PM which will leave me plenty of time to get down to Virginia, check out the car and return.

sorry for the tangent, but what is " good milage" on aTR ?

at what point should the car have a valve job?

is it common to have to go into the engine internals at "x" miles? i would consider a TR, if i cannot get a 512bb or carb lambo.

seems there are bulkhead / wiring issues and a known problem with the diff braking input shafts (?). given a car with higher milage that has good records, what is the experience of others with having to go "into" the engine / transaxle to do major work.

hope the TR turns out to be a good buy.

While looking through internet sites for TR's for sale, I just ran across another one... It's a '85 Testarossa with 11k miles.. It's located in Miami... Might drive there tomorrow morning instead of flying up to Virginia... The '85 with 11k miles is only $48k... That price doesn't sound right...
What's the service schedule on a '85? At what service is the next service due (on a 11k mile car)???

I was advised by an independent Ferrari mechanic to be wary of Miami cars - many are bought/sold/thrashed on a regular basis as party scene cars. Even for an '85 (early model), $48K sounds low. It could be real find, or it could be an abused car.

But it's all speculation - find an independent mechanic you trust and pay for a pre-purchase inspection (PPI). Verify the mileage. I think anyone here would tell you that a bad Testarossa can make the purchase price irrelevant.

It might just be an '85 that's due for a major service and has another $5K of miscellaneous catch-up repairs. Hard to speculate. But really nice 328's with 11K miles will probably go for more than $50K.

I left a voice mail for the seller, so I don't know details yet... I'll be very careful with the purchase.. Does anybody here know a trustworthy Ferrari mechanic down in Miami that could inspect the car? There are a few Ferrari dealerships down there but I don't know whom to consider for an inspection..
Even if a service is due, the car would still be very cheap.. I'll see how it runs and looks. If I'm satisfied, I'll have it inspected and if the inspection is ok, I'll buy it. Otherwise, I'll consider the '89 in Virginia...
I would prefer that the one in Miami works out because it's red and I'd prefer the red over white.. but white is very nice too....
