Here is a question for all the military folks that lurk this site.

I am considering joining the Air Force Reserves through the direct commission program. I have prior AF reserve service and was honorably discharged in the early 90's as an E3. I am now an attorney working for a corporation and was approached by a co-worker who is a retired Major General in the Air Force Reserves about the possibililty of doing direct commission. He encouraged me to check into it (it was not sure of the current need). I am 33 years old, but he did not seem to think that the age would be a hinderance since he thought they would take certain professions up to age 40.

Do any of the military folks here havy any knowledge of how the direct commission program works or the typical yearly commitment requirements? I want to be as educated as I can about the process before I talk to a recruiter.

    Thanks for any input.

As far as yearly requirements, I would think if your reserve, it would only be the one weekend a month, plus two weeks during the summer deal. Plus add in any other training that you would have to go through to be direct commissioned like OCS and the Air Forces job training school for I would assume being an lawyer. And honestly, right now, many people that think they are joining the "reserves" are being called up for active duty, although I am not sure of the current status of the Air Force. Your best bet for information is not a recuiter, but an OSO, which is an officer that selects people for the officer ranks. Good Luck.
