Hi guys my friends and I were wondering, do military vehicles like the hummers have keys? We figured if they had keys what would happen if in battle the driver lost the keys and they couldn’t leave, but if you just got in and pushed a button what would stop someone from stealing it, nobody I know seems to know for sure.

I've been in countless hummers, sometimes even riding shotgun but you know what I never even bothered to pay attention. It seemed like the driver would usually just get in and go. I wish my buddy was online right now, he was Motor T and could definatly tell you the answer you want.

Damn this is going to bother me.

Most that I know about do not. HMMWV's only have a key to remove the cable and lock wrapped around the steering wheel.

Ironically enough with the Apache, I need a key to open both canopy doors and another key for master ignition. Turning the key will not start it (!) but it does need to be turned to the "on" position in order to engage each engine's Air Turbine Starter. A quick check prior to hitting a starter switch is (1) "Fuel" (on), (2) "Air" (from the APU for initial engine crank) and (3) "Spark" (meaning the ignition key is on and engaged).

when i was in the marines, the hummers we used had keys. the keys were not to start the hummers tho. They were to unlock a chain wrapped around the steering wheel to keep it from being stolen.

On TV the other night they showed several Tank collectors. 1 guy was a billionaire w the worlds biggest tank collection worth $300M or so. He had the worlds biggest tracked vehicle, an Ex USSR GIANT thing that carried a howitzer that could launch nuke tipped projectiles. This thing looked wider than an H1 is long, Must have been at least as long as a Greyhound bus LOL

yeah, i take it that you never saw the video of the guy running from the cops in a tank? but he ended up being stupid and got stuck on a wall, ending the prusuit, and effectively ending his life...

The only military vehicles I have much personal experience with certainly had keys. You aren't going anywhere on a nuclear submarine without the key to start the reactor :)

If he hit the wall at a 90 degree angle, then went into 3 or 4 lanes of oncoming traffic at freeway speed!? WQow, that would have been a very bad day for a lot more people.

Most of the Hummves (Army, Marines, Air Force, Navy & Israeli -sp? ) I've been in only have a key for the lock for the chain around the steering whel, as mentioned. There is a switch that is turned to warm up the glow plug, once the light goes off, you turn the switch again until it starts up.

Do any desiels still have glowplugs? I would suggest that the military look into whatever magical technology Uhaul uses to make their trucks start like a normal car.

The 'magic' is called 'it does not have to be mil-spec'd to start in -40 weather' ;)

Also, the 'magic' is furthur known as a 'temperate climate' ;)
