Went to LBGP today for qualifying and in between Toyota Atlantic and cart qualifying. Two Minardi F1 2 seater cars came out for an exhitbition run. The sound was absolutley amazing, the crowd was going crazy. They visibily looked quicker than the champcars. It was great to see an F1 car run around the streets of Long Beach. I hope we see F1 at LongBeach in the near future.

When they can ante up a 20 million dollar guarantee beforehand, paid in advance, per year, for X number of years, it will happen.

    Problem is that won't happen.

Champ Cars are a helluva lot cheaper to run, less than a million, and Vegas CAN afford a GP, the question is do they want to/do they need to ?

Trying to envision who on earth could fit into that second seat....

I wonder what the times were around the circuit. keeping in mind that these were backmarker cars, and they are compromised designs because of the second seat.

The sound of those F1 cars was indeed glorious but I hope the real deal never turns a lap at Long Beach. I would hate to see F1 cars on a street course. The Champ, LeMans and Speed GT cars could hardly put their power down as it was.

News tonight reported laps were going for $10K each, and Jan Beekus (sp?), the CART announcer, was one of the lucky rides.

Not at all, the cars are just so beyond that course. I guess they only hold it there because of the Monaco wealth and history.

WTF? F1 cars of the turbo era put down 1000 bhp during qualifying. With the piss poor tires and aero of the day. Before traction control and all all girly boy driver aids that this current batch of drivers use. Google a pic of Gilles V sideways on Ocean. If the current delicate flower drivers can drive Monaco, they could do well at Long Beach again.

    Thanks for the info.
Seems like the new Panoz chassis are really capable..
Do they have any two seater variants?

Not yet, but it's supposedly in the works. IIRC, the Minardi deal with Stoddart is only for the first few races of the season.

FWIW, the DP01 unofficially reclaimed the track record at Laguna Seca during testing a few weeks ago.
