I think most popular trends start slowly, build linearly, then explode exponentially and then crash suddenly and seemingly unexpectedly. The excesses get progressively more flamboyant and silly as they reach the third stage.

Take bellbottoms and afros from the 1970’s (please!)

    Take the tech bubble.

    Tulips.

    How bout this:

My hope is an onerous trend has now reached this comical and penultimate stage: The insanely large vehicle.

    The Hummers.

    The Triumph Rocket III.

    Those ridiculously large Dodge trucks.

Maybe in 4 or 5 years people will actually be interested in sports cars again.

Given that oil hit a record $48/barrel today, the demand for urban tanks should drop off like you said.

Supersized fries lead to supersized waist-lines and supersized SUV's.

The end is definitely near... :)

One can only hope it ends soon -

Did you see the commercial where there is a whole family going about daily life in their house but from the windows you can see the background rushing by? It's all accompanied by soothing jazz and kids smiling. When they pan out, the viewer is supposed to become aware that it's not a house, but really an Infinity QX56 (all 3 tons, 17 ft of length and 6 1/2 ft height).

Does anyone else have the distinct lack of desire to drive their HOUSE down the freeway at 85 mph?
