Why wouldn't the mechanic supply those parts?

I think Steve is referring to the dealer fitting genuine parts, when superior aftermarket parts are available.

Oh well. Don't go to the dealer. HE bearing failure and you're liable? No thanks.

If you as the customer supply the aftermarket parts, then yes. But if the dealer supplies them, then it would be covered under warranty. This may well be the reason, even if superior aftermarket parts are available. Most independent mechanics would prefer to use the superior quality parts, regardless of price I think, but that always depends on the customer. Your cars are always good because you don't quibble over the price if the quality is there.

Nice mechanic. Most would claim it's not their problem and just charge for the hours worked.

That's the tradeoff between a fixed price vs going by the hour. Fixed price gives you somewhat of a price promise - but that promise is generally at a higher cost than going on an hourly rate because the mechanic is assuming the risk.

I don't mind assuming that risk - it's more equitable for everybody. Pay the guys for the hours they work, simple. As long as they're competent I have no problem. Holding your mechanics feet to the fire for a fixed price for things that aren't of their making is also a quick fire way to get offside with them.

Any mechanic that refused to fit parts they didn't supply wouldn't get my business. I'll give the local guys a shot and don't mind paying a bit extra, but sometimes parts can be had quicker/cheaper/better by going further afield. Sometimes dealers aren't allowed to buy them as well, they can only buy genuine.

I dunno what it's like with the mechanics you guys go to, but the guys I use are perfectly fine with it. The parts dept is the parts dept, they are the service dept and their job is to provide service.

Were you? I couldn't understand, I don't have the intelligence for it.
It's like my kids maths homework. I can usually do the first 1/3 of it. It's the other 3/4 I have trouble with.

Well as everyone here knows, if you're agreeing with me, then you're 100% correct.

Imagine if you put in a new alternator which failed and you said to your customer "bummer mate....I did a good job.... It's not my fault. Contact Bosch"

That wasn't what I was talking about... I was talking about labour costs. Obviously if you supply your own parts its totally on you to have them replaced if they're bad or don't fit, or whatever.

If you get a mechanic to supply and fit an alternator that ended up being broken that had to be removed/replaced - in my experience you will pay 2x the labour rate. They'll just take care of the legwork of sending the part back/replacing it for you, which I guess is nice. When it happens.

So feel free to fit OEM plastic radiators to your 355 because that's all the dealer can provide you with. I think I'll buy the all alloy ones and take the risk that they won't be faulty.

That happened with my IS250 Lexus, the alternator broke, was changed by the Toyota service dept and when they gave it back to me the charge light was still on and the service manager (woman - NTTIAWWT) told me I'd have to pay for a new alternator !!!'

    Hello !!!

Gary Gullible, it's not fixed and for over $1,500 I expected it to be working when I got it back, not have to fork out another $1500 to get if "fixed" again !!

It's funny that alternators keep coming up when you talk F cars. Mine has had 2 replaced in the last 10 years. They don't fare well with all that heat. Probably wise to replace them with every major.
