I recently bought this 360 from a failed BAT auction: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1999-ferrari-360-modena-39/ Being as dumb as I am, I figured it couldn't be worse than bore scored 911 or a self imploding e90 M3. Like all cars I buy either directly or after the auction it has arrived broken. I did order all new suspension sensor to fix the light(FYI, unlike the add, its on 90 percent of the time). The car has a misfire around 3k rpm, switching gears and in the upper rpm. I did a compression test and it was good(unlike my 355 ). The plugs look ok. I do have a code for 1 bank 1 oxygen sensor. I have ordered a new oxygen sensor, and all new plugs. I will also clean the injectors. I did a smoke test and there is a small leak on the driver side lower plenum. It looks like its where the rod mounts for the extra throttle command. On the parts diagrams I do not see any seals for this item. Has anyone else had a leak there before?
Replace the intake gaskets..and smoke test again. Most 360 misfire and o2 faults are indeed vacuum leaks
I had misfire and poorly running ….my MAF sensor had failed but no check engine light. Trial and error led me to finally replace the mafs.
This wouldn’t affect your misfiring issue but you might want to check that your exhaust components and ecu programming match. IE are you running euro headers cats but have North American ecu programming. The values for the oxygen sensors will be different since the manifolds are different. I had some codes on my car (euro) that were bogus. I spent time and money replacing o2 sensors which were fine. It was the software that was incorrectly set up because the federalization wasn’t as complete as it should be. Don’t trust the federalization - verify the parts on the car. The standards back in the early 2000s were loose. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Personally, I think the best practice is to replace as many Bosch parts on your car as possible. Start with MAF's and COP's. These are relatively inexpensive parts that can improve the running of even a smooth engine. I had a misfire issue with two cylinders and replaced the COP's and it went away. I also replaced the MAF's and the throttle bodies. Overall, a smoother running car. When buying Bosch components, shop around. It's amazing the variety of prices. Avoid any no-name seller like eBay but any regular retailer should have genuine parts.
I recently had similar issue that said bank1 sensor 1 and no other codes. However what I did was clear the codes and then took it for a drive and then re read the codes again! This time it came up with two failed coil packs. I replaced these with Bosch ones again, just not in a Ferrari box at a grand cost of £64 for the pair. Cleared the codes again and took it for a drive and all was perfect. They always say 02 sensors as this is what picks up the rich mixture when one or more coil pack fails to ignite the fuel. Be great to hear the outcome and fingers crossed you get it all running perfect again.
My plan so far is to replace both Maf's(just due to age), replace plugs and replace the 1 bad oxygen sensor. I will spray the area that may have an intake leak, and see if that changes the idle. I did clean and rebuild the injectors. A few did seem pretty dirty when doing a test spray(it'll happen with a 20 year old car with 19k miles). A single cylinder misfire code would be nice, so I would know where to start.
I’ve had a few Bosch coil pack issues over the last couple years. Misfires fixed right away. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Replace the coil packs. They're disposable on the 360 and last 3 to 5 years. I've just ordered 8 new ones. The heat makes them degrade. It's not a Porsche. Misfire = Replace the coil packs first.
I don't get it. Why? "The cheapest Ferrari you can buy is the most expensive Ferrari you will ever own"
I'm thinking coil packs, MAF's and some sensors replaced in this inexpensive 360 makes for quite the score. All super easy DIY items. Summit racing is the best source for MAF's by the way. $152 each for a 360.
I ordered 2 new Bosch mafs off Amazon for 280.00 for the pair(I wish I could find them for my 355 for that price). I can't find any coil packs in the USA for a reasonable price. I did order a few for testing off a UK site. If anyone has a US distributor for the coil packs, let me know.
Doesn’t get much better than a little over $50 per coil! (4x) BOSCH IGNITION COIL - 0221504015 https://a.co/d/5Pw9Cuo Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
I bought some Bosch parts from Amazon and they were absolutely genuine. I would trust Amazon over eBay though. Amazon at least has accountability while eBay doesn't have any.
I actually bought them off ebay since I could probably get them from the UK through DHL sooner than the Amazon shipment. I am very wary of buying fake parts from Amazon and Ebay. In fact there is a fake genuine BMW air freshener that is on Amazon. I keep telling Amazon they are fake, and they do nothing about it. In terms of the coils, I am less worried, as these are only made for Ferrari. So it would take a big effort for the Chinese to copy such a low market product. I could definitely be wrong, I do buy Ferraris without PPI's. I would say 95% of what I buy from both are real. Is there any Ferrari dealers who sell below suggested retail prices in the US?
Not really, minor discounts with FCA membership. Best prices are the usual suspects (Ricambi, Ferrparts, Euospares in the UK, ...)
I bought my 8 coils this last week on amazon ((8x) BOSCH IGNITION COIL - 0221504015) If they work and don't give a misfire then I'll let y'll know. about $50 per coil. They're real.. or they're counterfeit. If they work like they should then I don't care. Alternatively, a reseller buys the real part for $50 and resells them for $200.. because profit.
Would it be the same company that makes you buy 10 of some small things? I do appreciate their quick shipping, but the rest has a lot to be desired.
Was Amazon and arrived surprisingly fast. Look like same coils from Slovenia that I bought a few years ago and worked well…
I was talking about the company that marks them up, not Amazon. I've been buying Bosch parts off Amazon for years, and never had an issue.
I've replaced both maf's, and the car runs great(also did plugs, clean injectors etc). Now I just need to change the brake fluid and it'll be ready to run free at VIR next weekend. I am still replacing all the coil packs, as they can go at any point. The question is: should I buy an extra set of mafs as at any point Bosch can decide to stop making them(like the 355).
