So one daughter leaves her laptop in the room when we check out. We get home, discover he left it and we call the hotel. No one has checked into our room, so they send someone up to look for it - nothing in the room. We call security, housekeeping, and the front desk. Head of housekeeping talks to the maids that cleaned the room - they found nothing.

My youngest says she took photos of the room for her scrapbook as we leave, we go through the photos and see the laptop on the coffee table.

Any suggestions on how to handle it from this point?

Here is the laptop, a thin Mac Book Air in a black sleeve sitting next to the magazines.

Why in the world would anyone take a picture like that for a scrapbook? It certainly doesn't prove that the laptop was there at the time she checked out, if anything it proves that the laptop was in plain sight and shouldn't have been forgotten. Sorry.

The pic above is cropped from a shot of the living room, she took about a dozen shots of the two suites in which the girls stayed. We had 7 suites in total.

My point is, laptop was there when we left, only hotel staff has been in the room, and the laptop is now missing.

Looking for advice from someone that is in the industry or has dealt with this before.

You're screwed. Best bet is to call Apple. I have never done it but was told once that if you have the serial number of the Mac, they can set a software update for it that will brick it and leave a msg on the screen to bring it to the AppleStore to work on. Once there, they will call you.

    (But again I have never done it.) {Edit: I am being told now that Apple does not do this anymore.}

Failing that, I doubt you will see it again unless you are very lucky. As said by Miltonian above, the photo does not help you at all.

Also, she needs to update EVERY password she has. (Just in case you did not think about that.) And now would be time to come clean on any thing she may have sent a boyfriend, as unless she had it set to auto log out when asleep, whoever has it... HAS ALL OF THAT!!

{Edit: For FYI, here is a blog entry that may help for the NEXT time or the next guy:

Write a email to the local police with the Model and ID of the computer, attach the photos, and cc the hotel management. File an official police report immediately.

Get the contact info for all the local pawn shops and email or phone them with the police report number and the Id of the computer. It may be in one of them already.

Search craigslist for the laptop, check the posting date, and contact those people requesting the ID of the laptop to check out if it is OK or some pretense like that. If you find it, immediately notify the police of its location and the info of the perp.

    Definitely an inside job.

Thanks for the advice. She started changing passwords right away.

I am having a hard time (34 minutes on hold so far) just getting the serial # from Apple - and I bought it from their online store! No, they can't even shut off the updates for it.

I am aware of the tracking software out there, you'd think Apple Care, Microsoft, or Adobe could tell you if and where it was being accessed since they can track every time you run their software.

Just a frustrating experience all around - I'm looking at a picture of it while The Venetian is saying "nothing was left in the room". You would think this wouldn't happen at a place you just dropped $10k at. :<(

In the mind of the thief, the fact that you just dropped $10k is justification for what he/she did.

If you bought from the online store, they would have sent you a email receipt and tracking, ect. The S# will or should be on it. It's is on mine.

Also, you should have the box and and the documentation from when you got it. Its on most of those.

The sale and tracking email had everything but the serial #, which apple was able to provide (it just took 42 minutes). I have *way* too many computers, even at the house, to keep all the boxes, non of the documentation has the serial # on it, not even the packing slip.

To be fair, any one can lose something. I guess a mistake is how people learn to be more responsible.

Regarding the laptop, give the police a call and file a complaint, did your MacBook have Lojack, some of the are already pre-installed, so check with the store you bought it from, or call the number for LoJack.

And I would call again describing what the laptop was in, maybe they missed it while looking, but highly doubt that.

Jerkoff is sent to a room to check, but knows that he can't blame the cleaning crew as they haven't been there yet, and also knows there are security cameras in the corridors...what do you think he will do? He will hide it somewhere and come back and get it later, and carry it out under a jacket or in a different package so the cameras don't show anything. Job done.

What you should have done is not give anyone else the details once you know the room has not been cleaned, and ask to speak to the head of security directly. After you get his name and number, you tell him that you need him to check for it personally. Usually, they are better paid, and because you have their name and are holding them accountable, they will be more honest about it.

At this point, here are your options:

    1. A well-written letter to the management, stating your position and how much you spent at their establishment, will usually get you some kind of response. Ask for their insurance information...that will usually prod them into doing something.

    2. Your homeowner's insurance policy should cover it.

    3. Your credit card might cover it, if it was purchased recently on the right credit card, such as AmEx platinum.

    4. Since you can't be bothered to do something simple like create an online spreadsheet where you put in the serial numbers and other important information for big-ticket purchases, are you sure you want to deal with this hassle? If you can afford 10k on a hotel bill, just go buy a new laptop and be done with it?

    5. Teach your daughter some responsibility...is she going to pay for at least part of the replacement? Did she pay for any of the original amount? Is she going to change where she puts valuable things when traveling? How will she safeguard her valuables at home and on the road? Will she have checklists from now on? How will she check to make sure that everything has been packed when she leaves somewhere?

happened to me here once, scumbag steals laptop, eager young police rookie notices scumbag with a high-end laptop, and tracks me down 11pm Friday night (surreal phone call; this is the VPD - can we have your login information for your laptop to verify ownership: I kid you not).

By that point my insurance company owned it, I got my data off it, and a new machine. Lesson learned.

Thanks for your reply - I think.

I don't think you know what inventory data I keep or the manner I keep it in, but thanks for suggestion.

The paid staff that had a key to the room are the ones that took the laptop, so I don't know what precautions could have been taken to prevent them taking it if they really wanted it. Your post seems to indicate you are aware of this happening, and how it happens. Leaving it in the room wasn't the brightest idea, but three people swept the room before we left and everyone (except for perhaps housekeeping or security) missed it.

I did check with Amex - only 90 days since purchase for coverage.

My daughter is responsible, and I do teach that to my kids. She isn't asking for another one, in fact asked me not to buy her a new one since she said it was her fault she left in the room. She is back on her 4 year old Dell.

I am very surprised at the reaction from every level of The Venetian - they could care less and don't even return phone calls. Even if they thought I was full of it, they could at least have been courteous and professional. If I had at least a 1% belief that one of my staff stole something I'd be all over it - especially being able to narrow it down to 2-3 staff and a 5 hour time frame in a vacant suite at the end of a hallway.

Makes we wonder how often this happens.

Well that would be great, we made a report but they told us there would be no investigation or followup. The only person from the PD that would even talk to us was titled "Call Taker" - whatever that means.

We also reported it to Pawn Link (or something like that) that Pawn shops apparently have to check serial #s against.

If you're lucky he'll be a 'good guy' and realize that someone on his staff is a theif.

What did they say about the picture of the laptop still in the room? I'm thinking that maybe they weren't looking for a laptop in protective case but a laptop somewhere else, maybe on a desk?
Being in that protective case sort of makes it look like a magazine, kind of.

Best of luck and let us know what happens!

Alot of people are suggesting your daughter pay for it or a part of it and I agree with partial payment idea, unless she's the kind of girl(like my girlfriend) who is constantly losing and forgetting things! if she is make her pay for all of it if not and its out of character for her i'm sure she feels bad enough about it without her loved ones ragging on her about it.

    Again best of luck!

    Cheers!

    Wednesday update:

Travis (GM) called and spoke with my daughter at length. Some more odd things came up: all of the reports we made and people we talked to on Saturday never appeared on any records, even the people that said they went to the room to check - only our additional followup on Sunday was documented. Also, there was a maid present when we left, and the hotel has no record of her entering the room, and told us no one should have been there when we were checking out.

No one from security, housekeeping, front desk, investigations, or Travis even wanted to see the picture of the laptop. I found that also very odd and somewhat disturbing - wouldn't it help to have a picture of what you are looking for?

The room is still vacant, so only hotel staff has been in the room.

There is no video surveillance of the guest hallways according to Travis.

I now have an entirely different opinion of how safe things are in a hotel room....

If they take the picture from them that is them acknowledging that it happened. If they keep putting you off with out taking or giving new info then they know you will eventually quit calling.

Good luck with it, at least try for a few free nights. :)
