    Hey guys!

Just to keep you up to date, i think im pretty sure these are the schools im going to apply to...

    MIT
    UPenn
    U of Michigan-Ann Arbor
    UT (Texas)
    Uof Cal-Berkely
    USC
    Boston University
    Stanford
    Georgetown
    CalTech

Yea, i know its a lot, but if you have the advantage of not paying, it doesnt hurt to apply and have enough choices.

I have had enough time to think, and i wouldnt be depressed or think its the end of the world if i didnt get into mit, but i would tottaly think its the end of the world if i dont get accepted to any of these schools...eekkk..:D

Ill let yall know what happens...

If any of you have any info regarding any of these schools...i would greatly apprecaite it in order to help me understand them better than just whats on their websites..

    Much appreciated
    John

If you have any questions about UPenn or Michigan I can help you. I'm at Penn now, I've been around Michigan all my life, almost went there and have a bunch of friends there currently. Happy to help.

Well because the schools i applyed to were better than hopkins in engineering and business...

Plus they are not known for their civil engineering...as UIUC is number 1 in that catagory over MIT, Stanford, Berkely, Georgia Tech...

Gotcha. (I just checked the type of engineering you like on page 1)

Hopkins does Biomed-Engineering the best...and that is pretty much it as far as Engineering goes.

They did just make (buy?) a new Business school I heard. Might be good in a few years, but right now, well it definately is no Penn.

I almost applied to MIT but decided it would be better to stay in state because it's free. My choice was also simpler because GaTech is ranked #4 for engineering schools, not worth spending $100k+ for a better name.

Just a note, after you have all your acceptances under your belt, check to see how each school does their curriculum. You might find some to be a much better fit then others.

(For example, how they handle AP credits, transfer credits, etc; how they do distribution/non discipline class requirements, the ease of doing a double major in two unrelated fields as told to you by both faculty AND students, etc etc)

It gets important as it can mean a lot of time saved (or wasted) down the road.

John, you should be! Congrads to say the least!

After the dust settles from your partying, read my above post and start doing some 'light' research into your the schools like I mentioned in my above post (Post 111). :p

Of Course. I have until May 1 for any of the colleges i get into to make a decision, hopefully save some money to check out things...:D

I think its pretty cool to be chosen from thousands of students that applied to the civil engineering school and be one of the 550 students to be accepted...:D

Yea I know what you mean. The thing that attracts me about UT is their full ride they offered me.

I think the price of the education will be a great factor for me, since my moms a single parent and makes less than some of your down payments on fcars...But not making a lot of money enables me to have a "0" for my expected family contribution on my fafsa...

    So we shall see....

right now im still a bit shock, but more excited...

You've probably already done this... but make sure you visit each school in person. You might or might not like the overal "atmosphere" that you'd only be able to get from a visit.

I was stupid and accepted my school before even setting foot on campus. I ended up loving it, but it could have been bad.

I noticed you were looking at civil engineering. A fine discipline, but you might want to consider the following:

    Mechanical engineers build weapons

    Civil engineers build targets

But by all means don't let my little joke affect your choice. Somebody has to build targets! But seriously folks, I wish I knew more about civil engineering: dirt is just so interesting.

OK, really: follow your heart. You will never own a Ferrari if you become an engineer, but guess what, you won't care.

    Wait a second there!
I do believe there are a number of engineers here with Ferrari.

Doing straight engineering work may not earn you the money to buy a million $ car. Engineering can open your mind to working in nearly any capacity you desire (sales, management, self employeed, ect).

So you really think I will never own a Ferrari since I will be an engineer?

I'm pretty sure their are engineers that own them...plus, its always been a goal of mine to set up my own engineering firm...so i believe ill own one in the future...I know i could do it.

Oh my goodness, you folks take things FAR too seriously!

So in all seriousness: do what you love. In the long run that is far more important than what car you drive. But yes, if it's that important to you, you can sacrifice and own a Ferrari, even if you are a bag boy at Kroger.

Can't tell if you were joking about engineering or not, but there are PLENTY of people on this site who are engineers with Ferraris. In fact, name one other profession where you can reasonably make 100K/year before 25 with a four-year degree. If you're an engineer, it's fairly easy to switch professions. Not the other way around though.

Anyway, as someone already said, it doesn't matter. Everyone has their talents and passions in life and should pursue them without thinking about money. If you're chasing dollars, you're setting yourself up for unhappiness. But if you love a profession and happen to make good money doing it, then consider yourself lucky.

And Congrats, btw. I know I miss being in college. Best times you'll ever have.

I applied to both engineering and business schools. I was thinking..and engineering degree can get you further than just a business degree. You pretty much need to get an mba to try to make yourself different than others.

I'm not aiming for the profession with the greatest money but one that i love to do. But, I have been in poverty my whole life with a single parents so i would love to set up a life for my family much different than mine, so im trying to do the best where i can be successful whatever it may be.
