Hi all, Can Cams from, lets say 76 to 81 308, be mix and match? What i'm getting at is if i got a late 308 (81), that runs good and i decided to change her to carbs, can i change out those cams to carb cams (76-79)? Purist please don't hate me. The Carb 308 i was looking at sold and this 81 is pretty good and i can get her cheap.
No. 75-77 is one DOT NON CAT cam profile. 78-79 is the carbed CAT profile 1980 is the start of fuel injection systems. Sorry. Early ones are the ones to use.....$1K each.
Welcome. The injected to Weber 308 conversion CAN be done, but the parts cost is staggering. There's a thread here on a Mondial owner that did it.
Absolutely! The 78-79 carb cams aren't any better than what you already have I don't think...you want 76-77 cams. Another option is Web cam can weld and regrind your cores to the carb spec, P6 spec or something in between.
To quantify, $3K to convert a 2v injected to Webers; can use the 2v carb manifold and 4 new 40 DCNF-12 so it's simpler than the qv. Takes a good weekend to do, pretty much bolt-on. Works best if you do the exhaust as well. LOTS of threads on carbs, exhausts and cams. Have fun!
I'm having my cams re-worked again by Web cam with probably more duration if they have to re-weld them . .. I was running .406 lift on intakes and .350 on exhaust and she idled fine but I do have aftermarket EFI systetm. I'm hoping polishing and coating the valve shims will stop the excessive wear I had. I'm sure you'd be fine with the mild P6 grind . Right now I have the stock cams back in my car and the compression ratio is up near 12:1. I just realized this when I did some calc's for some pistons I'm ordering for another motor . .. thought it was down near 11. At first I thought it was a bit of a dog after running around with the bigger cams for a year but after a little tuning I'm really impressed with how she goes with the stock cams . .. think it will pull a 328 (yeah . .. that's right . .. bring it on!!! ). Something else that really livened my car up incredibly was more ignition advance/hotter spark/MSD. It's nice not being all nervous at a light with a merge lane and a minivan next to you . Sean
Thank you for the replys gentlemen. So Webcam can take the cams from the 81 and regrind them to P6 specs? Would i have to supply them with the #'s for the P6? Intake and Exaust?
Yes, they can regrind to pretty much any spec you please. They should have the p6 specs on file, but they also have a LOT of other specs on file. If you tell them what you are building, they are happy to recomend a grind that will work well for you.
P6 is the Lemans spec, it'd be a little lumpy for street use, IMO. Great at 8K RPM only........ But as you see, we have some maniac engine builders in here! LOL! I'm more of a 'turn the key and drive it like you stole it' type of owner.......
My '75 GT4 got stuck with the wrong intake cams - I have '79 cams. I've always kind of had in the back of my mind that I would have them reground to at least stock, but really, why would I stop there? Can you give me an idea what webcams charges to grind a cam? (Just curious, I'll probably not do this for a while, like maybe next winter.)
I called yesterday to ask for a price and the girl told me $1400. To buy a set of used early carbs (76-77) i'm assuming are 3x the price?
Just caught wind of this thread. You're telling me that this Webcam Co. can ad to your exiting cams, and then grind them to give you the specs for a early carb 308 (76-77)?? Double WOW!
Yes they can....but that will probably bugger up your CIS. If you talk to Web, they can probably tell you wath duration they sell the porsche guys with CIS.
I have a set of 2V manifolds and carbs( carbs are new but have been laying around for some time )and a set of genuine factory P6 cams if anyone is interested .By the way I am looking for a drysump block if anyone can help ?
