i recently had to add some oil to my car, and of course i could not find the same weight oil as my mechanic uses(5w40). i went with the same brand, mobil1, but instead had to use 15w50. i added 2 quarts, is there any potential complications from doing this, or am i ok?

You're probably OK. There is an engine oil forum called Bobistheoilguy.com the guys that are on this site are oil fanatics and there are some the have experimented by mixing two different brands and weights and then have UOAs done on their mixes and find no problems in doing that. They describe it as getting two good oil packages as one ie; some oils do this well and others do something else by mixing you get a little of both. Oil companies even state that they are compatible with other oils. I remember being taught as kid not to mix weights and brands, back when only conventional oil was available and maybe even then it was only an old wives tale. The additive packages were so different apparently from brand to brand that that was supposedly the reason for not mixing, created sludge and harm acids etc.

No big deal really. Strange the 15w50 is all you could find though. At least you didn't use much.

In what regard is it great? Are you using it on a track car?
