The Mets have been on a tear despite having played 52 games in the past 10 days. They are the one team I am most concerned about in the Phils' quest for the WS title. And incidentally, thank you to Pete Rose for providing the spark and leadership to the 1980 World Championship team. Bob, if it's Phils-Dodgers we need a small wager and I can meet you in LAS Xmas week so you can pay it off!
Its a little late but the Diamondbacks are in full meltdown mode. The lost something like 7 out of their last 8 games to fall out of a playoff spot. Management there is NOT HAPPY! Imagine how much money they lost.
Pete was a local Las Vegan. He could be seen around town. Gambled occasionally. I'm sure he made a killing in signing events. He was really well liked. Got such a raw deal from MLB. I really, really hope someone at MLB told him they would put him in the hall of fame eventually. If you asked the Sportswriters it would be 100% for induction. As to a bet -- I don't gamble which is why I live in Las Vegas -- no temptation! IMO, it might be the Padres / Phils. Next week is going to be critical. If the Dodgers beat the Padres they will have home field advantage against the Phils. Honestly, its all about the Dodgers pitching.
Bob. If you can find Jason Stark's column about Pete in Wednesday's NY Times it is a terrific read, with a balanced picture of Pete, MLB, HoF, etc. Pete DID have a chance to clean everything up, but he blew it. Still no excuse for him not to be in the HoF. I talked to him a couple of times in LAS over the years and he was always funny and friendly, but always on the hustle (was pumping autographs, photos, posters). That's OK.
Three of the series feature division rivals. Maybe the Yankees and Royals will be glad to have each other!
52 games in 10 days? Maybe 52 innings.... LOL That's just it: EVERY team gets hot, and cold, and hot, and cold, look at the Royals, there were on a helluva winning roll about 2 months ago, then, they couldn't win anything, they were tied for the division lead with Cleveland(?), then lost something like 8 out of 10, and now they seem to be warming up again.... A couple of points: - He HAD to do the signing events because that was his living, he didn't make the zillions they do today. Can you imagine a player today making 200 million *AND* playing like Rose did, every game, every inning? I can't. And I think a lot of what he made 40 years ago he lost gambling, but I could be wrong... - Every time I think I want to go wager $100 or $200 - thinking I have a 'sure bet', I do it on paper - and my 'sure bet' loses about 80% of the time. The last 'sure bet' I put real money on was the Super Bowl that NE came into undefeated, I put $100 on the Giants - and won about $1200 IIRC. That was at about the same time I was making a killing at KENO, of all things, I made about 30K one summer, and then my LUCK changed - but I realized that and quit playing so much, and have kept almost all of my winnings. Oh, I still show up, track some numbers, if I don't see what I like, what I kinda 'notice', I don't play a single game, I'd have a beer then leave. Because I know better. And I think since that one Summer I've spent maybe $250 playing Keno over the last 12~ years, and I've broke even. - Do the Dodgers even HAVE a Pitcher left? I was listening to my favorite Fox Sports Radio guy Bernie Fratto, he is based in Vegas and said the same things: Pete had a chance to redeem himself by admitting he gambled on baseball to the Commish, but kept denying it, even though they had a mountain of evidence proving otherwise. I LOVE Pete, but he did it to himself, but still, he should be in the HOF for his merits ON the field, and the fact they (MLB) KNOWS he never bet AGAINST his teams - he only bet on them to WIN. He didn't murder or kill anyone, and gambling is allowed today (and please don't tell me players don't gamble on baseball today, because that's a crazy notion - they have 'friends' bet for them...) And it would also be silly to think Rose was the ONLY guy in ALL of baseball to bet 40-50 years ago. I'm guessing that Starks' NYT column is behind a pay wall - every other NYT article is...
I've always had this dream of winning the Lottery, and then bringing guys in that were retired and NEEDED money, just for a meet and greet/mingle with people, just to get them some money. Say 50K or 100K for a day... I was thinking more along the lines of long-retired racecar drivers, but any athlete that was beat-up physically or had CET and needed help, a way to help them and not hurt their dignity/egos...
Me watching Manny Machado hot dog a throw leading to an error that gave the Dodgers a lead and then striking out with 2 runners on in the bottom of the 9th. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Manny Machado is a punk which is why the Dodgers canned him from the team and the Dodger fans can't stand him. Dodgers' Dave Roberts says Padres' Manny Machado threw a ball at him during NLDS Game 2: 'There was intent' (msn.com)
I didn't think MLB 'owns' the Baseball HOF, so he COULD get in... And as an aside, I listen to Fox sports radio all day and night, I forget who it was, but they had a good point: Let's say you bet on your team to win, and you bet on them to win A LOT, but then, you DON'T bet on them - at all, what does that tell you? That you don't think they will win, therefore you won't bet on them to win?
As a Mets fan, I still feel we’re at about 50/50 for winning this series as it stands now. It’s uncharted territory for these guys.
I said this 2 weeks ago. Watch out for the Padres. They are the hottest team since the All Star break.
Fox Sports announcers exposing their physics underwear. One dope just claimed a curveball’s RPM increasing as the pitch gets closer to the plate. When are these guys going to give up on the legend of “late break”?
Congratulations Mets fans and Mr. Weiss. The Phillies' performance in every aspect of the series was abysmal, especially plate discipline. Wheeler and Harper played well, the rest of the team bupkis. Just another nail in the coffin of Philadelphia sports fans. It ain't no bed of roses.
Thanks. Appreciate it. I am also surprised at the Phils - especially the bullpen, but also the lack of depth in the lineup. I think it’s tough to stay on point when the team has been easily out in front the whole way.
But the Eagles are supposed to be in the Super Bowl this year... So was Hurts' big season 2 years ago a fluke?
Well, I'm shocked. Finally the relief pitching reversed between the Dodgers and the Padres. Mookie once again gets them started. Image Unavailable, Please Login
