For those of you who don't know, Sunday afternoon was the Grand Am race at Watkins Glen. MM (not-so-currently posting on fchat) was out there racing in a pack of 74 cars in a BMW 330. That's right 74 cars! Not 6, like that other race.

This was the third race he's participated in this year so far. But due to technical difficulties with the car, this is the first one where many laps were put in. Hopefully I'll get a better run down of what actually happened and the 'oopsie' this weekend at the breakfast.

Unfortunately I couldn't locate any pictures of MM in the pack... but this will have to do.

That track looks like Mosport not the Glen. It was a Cup event, if I'm thinking of the same event. I had a client that came in second.

The image is of a 996, car #40 in the Grand Am Cup, GS class. Or did I just take off the wrong picture from grandamerican.com ?

Pictured below, another 996 and one of the handful of Mustang GTs.

    Both are pictures of Mosport.

I was there coaching yesterday. Got a sunburn because all of my hats are at the new house and I wasn't going to put my sunscreened head into my new helmet.

The Grand Am Cup race was this past Saturday and was fun to see. The non-locals were easy to spot.

    Oh yes, great race...

A huge entry and an equally huge amount of cautions, 30, over the course of the event as GrandAM and GrandAM Cup are famous demolition derbies.

I'd rather see a yellow flag filled race with some racing, rather than an incident free race with the lead cars doing parade laps.

At least there's racing going on :)

Wow that looks like fun, I'm envious !

I don't know much about this race series, so please excuse the noob questions. What're the specifications on these cars ? Street setup or heavily modded ?

Why did MM use a 330 as a base instead of an M3 ? Just curious.

    Cool! Looks like a blast!

(best part... finally, a thread in racing that has nothing to do w/ the USGP!)

The race was televised on Speed over the weekend.

What racing? Off they go, within one lap a 20 minute caution. Green flag, one lap later another 20 minute caution on and on it went.

The pace car led more laps than the actual winner. If thats racing, I'll eat it.

They need to take a hint from Speed GT and divide the two classes up as it seems there are way too many cars in the field unless, of course, they WANT to get someone killed, then their business plan is right on target.

Gee ... that sounds like the last Speed Touring race where Chip Herr took out half the field by the second corner. I guess it's better to get it done all in one shot than to spread it out.

Probably would be a good idea to break up the GA cup field but look at the numbers of Grand Am vs. ALMS.

Comparing the last two race weekends (Watkins Glen for GA and Mid Ohio for ALMS)

    GA Cup (combined) 71 cars
Speed GT and Touring (if they were combined) 55 cars

    Rolex 47 cars
    ALMS 22 cars

    More cars, more racing.

You keep bashing GA but ALMS keeps loosing more and more cars. What's going to happen next year when Audi brings out their new gazillion dollar car and poor Dyson still has to race that 4 year old 4 banger?

Both series offer something different to race fans. You keep harping on ALMS and bashing GA. A true race fan watches both, hell I watch Crafstman Truck races !

Why don't you give your GA bashing a rest.

    Jon
