Does anyone have an opinion on which would be the better fully synthetic oil for my 1985 308 QV? And of course why.

If the motor hasnt been run properly in some time you may want to put a middle of the road Oil in(castrol gtx for example) and change it out after a few hundred miles, it'll ensure that some of the residue's that may have built up whilst the cars been off the road have a chance of being drained out before serious use, it will also help bed everything back in

Andrew are you saying use a middle of the road all due to the price as only using it for a short period, or is there another reason, Cheers Pete

Hey Pete, a bit of both really, sometimes the new fangled synths are a bit too good, a good example would be a 911 racer (935 moby dick style car) that one of our tech's worked on a few years ago (before he came here) after a full rebuild the car was burning oil and not producing enough power, turns out the rings hadnt bedded in properly due to the efficiency of the oil used.....they changed the oil out and ran the car for a few hard laps to bed everything down......then changed back to the good stuff.......outcome was more power and less oil burnt

Great, thats really interesting to know, i've got mine all started and going now but still with its original oil, when we towed it to mine my friend suggested putting it in 3rd so it pumped oil back round the engine, when we got to mine it started first time with the new optima battery

Everything seems to be ripped off these days, saw a programme a few days ago and they were knocking out fake Ferraro Rocher, another was making knock off G3 cutting compound.
It wouldn't take much to get some bogus Shell cartons and fill them with cheap crap oil.

Pete, it may be perfectly alright but I always think things that are cheap, they are cheap for a reason and since the oil is the lifeblood of an engine and Ferrari engines aren't exactly cheap to repair I'd want to be certain what I was putting mine.

I have found http://lubrication.net/ very good when buying bulk oil (20L). The fully synths are a bit thin for the older V8s so my advice is go for Helix and you will not go wrong. Stay clear of GTX and any standard mineral oils - they are obsolete and outperformed by modern semi synthetics.
