I'm currently in the process of getting a new mobile phone, and decided to do some research on the latest and greatest on the Internet before being confronted by salespeople in phone stores.

Naturally, there were reviews for hundreds and hundreds of different phones, and an even greater number of phone related websites. After half an hour of browsing and confusion, my curiosity determined that I would look up the history of mobile phones and go 'back to basics.'

It turns out the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X (affectionately known as the 'brick phone') was the first ever completely portable self-contained cellular phone, getting FCC approval on March 6 1983. It was in stores by 1984 for $3,995. Accounting for inflation, that's around $7400 in 2005 dollars.

    From Motorola:

By the time the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X phone became the first FCC-approved portable cellular telephone in 1983, the company had invested fifteen years of research and $100 million in the advancement of cellular technology. The DynaTAC 8000X phone weighed 28 ounces (794 grams), was 13 x 1.75 x 3.5 inches in dimension, boasted one hour of talk time and eight hours of standby time and featured a LED display.

“Consumers were so impressed by the concept of being always accessible with a portable phone that waiting lists for the DynaTAC 8000X were in the thousands, despite the initial $3,995 retail price,” recalled Rudy Krolopp, one of the original Motorola design team members responsible for creating the DynaTAC 8000X phone. “In 1983, the notion of simply making wireless phone calls was revolutionary and it was an exciting time to be pioneering the technology at Motorola.”

In the first year the network had expanded to 300,000 users worldwide.

I'd love to hear people's experiences with this phone, or any of the other pioneering phone technologies. Before the DynaTAC 8000x I believe people still had brick phones in cars, boats and planes, and portable versions had an attached briefcase to supply the power.

Getting back to the present, I'm interested to know what phones you guys currently use, and what phones you want or think are the best on the market.

I just got a Motorola V3 RAZR. Small, light, and has a nice big display. It doesn't have a whole lot of features, but I don't use it for internet, games, PDA, or anything like that anyway. Quad band, and Cingular has a roaming agreement overseas so when I hopefully go to Italy next summer the phone will have service. Camera is only 0.3 megapixels, but that is sufficient for me. A very good phone, particularly now that Cingular is giving it away in some areas.

The new V3x looks like it will be nice too. It has a 2MP camera, flash, and most importantly a removable memory slot. It weighs 30g more and is 6mm thicker than the original V3.

No issue with my Treo 650 (Verizon). Love it. Syncs right up to my car via Bluetooth when I turn the key, plays MP3s thru my car stereo and I can watch movies on it with my 1 gig card installed. Plus I got some great booty shots from last night. ;)

Does true HTML which makes me a happy guy.

Yeah, it's a big phone - bigger than I'm used to.

I had a Blackberry 7100t (TMobile) a few weeks back and found it difficult to use. Didn't try the 7290 or the other one with the QWERTY keyboard. I couldn't get a signal on that phone in my house.

I still have a Moto brick phone.

I had A LOT of problems with my Treo 600...Got rid of it because it got ridiculously unstable. I'm curious to see how the 650 does over time.

The V3's are good phones...I just sold mine about two weeks ago...If you get one, DO NOT GET A VERSION 1....The version 1's were littered with bugs and problems...The version 1 was the one originally released by Cingular...I had the Black V3 (which is the special edition)...Very good phone, only drawbacks where the camera quality and the internal memory was only 5MB which for us MP3 guru's...doesn't cut it...I think the Samsung E730 is one of the best phones for the money right now...1.3 Megapixel, speakerphone, bluetooth...80MB+ of internal memory, and samsung reliability and ease of use for around $349...I would take it over a V3.
