OK, I've just learned the 365 comes from 365cc/cylinder but mysteries remain.

Between 1965 and 1975, Ferrari produced many different road cars that used the GT (gran torismo) model designation, appending various letters such as B and C which I thought was for berlinetta and cabriolet or couple but maybe not as the distinction between couple and berlinetta is vague to me.

Ferrari also made /4 and 2+2 cars designating 4 passengers...I thought the /4 was full sized and 2+2 was jump seats, but apparently not strictly true.

Are there any hard fast rules to the model numbers, i.e. has anyone made sense out of them?

The 4 has nothing to do with pasengers, it denotes the number of cams. B is Berlinetta, C is Coupe (can have jump seats as the C4 does), S is Spider, no extra letter (GT) generally means 2+2, most people add the 2+2 in the description but it is not part of the original name.

Here is a quick list of 365's (from memory - which is spotty at the moment):

365 GT California - 3rd series California, however, in reality it is a follow on to the 500 Superfast. 1966 - 1967 production 14 made.

365 GTC - follow on to the 330 GTC, very similar body with improvements throughout. Can't remember dates at the moment, 100 made

365 GTS - Spider version of 365 GTC, 20 made

    365 GT - (2+2) - Queen Mum - 800 made

    365 GTB/4 - Daytona Coupe 1968 - 1973 production 1284 made

    365 GTS/4 - Daytona Spider 1971 - 1973 production 122 made (originally)

365 GTC/4 - commonly known as the C4. Technically a 2+2 but the rear seats were as acomodating as those on a Porsch 911. Had a black front bumper that was commonly referred to as clown lips. 1971 - 1972 production 500 made

    365 GT/4 - (2+2) - The true 2+2 that followed the C4, similar bodystyle to 400 and 412. 1972 - 1976 production 400+ made (I can't remember the actual number)

    OK, what did I miss?

    Regards,

    Art S.

Um, I think I'll just stand aside and keep out of the way of a guy who obviously knows more than I do about this subject.
    (well done Art)
