Hi All, Was wondering what model year is the 328GTB serial 66711? It has a build date of 9/86. Regards
Interesting you ask. That is one 328 that according to my records was built out of order, or at least assigned an out of order model year. By number sequence logic would suggest it is a September 86 build and is surrounded by cars with a 1987 VIN. According to my records the car carries a "G" VIN which makes it a 1986. According to my records USA production for 1987 USA models started mid July 86. Don't know what to make of all that but that VIN is in red on my list for that reason.
Thanks for that answer, Brian. The reason that I am inquiring about that VIN is that, according to F-Register.com, it is the VIN that comes before my 328GTB VIN. This is doing a search for Nero/Nero 328GTBs. Here is the 6 328GTB Nero/Nero's that show up on the F-Register DB. Mine is 68233. I know that the Nero/Nero VIN that comes after mine shows up as a 88-1/2 model year, I was trying to figure out the VIN model year that precedes 68233. According to this, my 68233 is the only 87Nero/Nero GTB. Regards Image Unavailable, Please Login
Trouble with the black cars is that owners rarely indicate if the car is in the "Standard Black", or in "Black Metallic" (Nero Fer 901/C, also called "Nero Carbonio" in some countries). Black is not uncommon here in Europe on GTBs: in my records, and only for the "Série 2" cars, I have for example 76869, 77414 (Nero Fer 901/c), 77452 ("triple black": body, leather, carpets) 77967, 78118, 78252, 80628, 81392, 81523. I own 66731 euro 328 GTS and it was registered September 30, 1986. Hope it can help. I saw many black 328 here. ciao ciao
The statistic I have, but i am unable to cross-check it for corroborate, is that 77% of all 328s produced were painted Rosso Corsa by the factory, 11% in the two blacks and 12% for all other colors. Rgds
I have never figured out why only 77% were Rosso Corsa. I always assumed that cars that were shown in other colors were just pics of cars in primer coats before the red was applied!
Are you limiting your inquiry to GTB's ? USA GTB's ? or any 328 ? If you are including non USA cars determining model year is as clear as mud and that can be very difficult. It is why in the Ferrari world in general many just use a chassis number and ignore model year. On the off chance you are looking at USA GTB's only the closest one prior to yours that I am aware of is 67775, a US car in R/C Nero sold originally at Newport Imports. There were several GTB's between for different markets.
Well, I know of a Belgian 328 GTS that left the factory in Blu Sera / Beige leather, that the owner had repainted in Rosso Corsa after a few mont(hs. Pity, isn't it? "Blu Medio Met" is not that difficult to identify visually, of course if you have a picture of the car, as it has a strong tinge of gray; plus, it is very rare on 328s. But distinguishing "Blu Chiaro" from "Blu Sera" can be very, very tricky on pictures... Rgds
Mike, You know of course that the factory used two different primers at the time? Gray for all colors except Rosso Corsa, Pink for Rosso Corsa. (To the best of my knowledge, this is true) As far as I have been able to ascertain, the 328 was the "reddest" Ferrari. Many carbed cars where not red initially, and many 355s reverted to a larger proportion of colors. Rgds
I know of a Belgium 328 GTS with the vrry rare color "prugnia" that has been repainted in rosso corsa at 11.000 km immeadiatley by the second owner. I am still looking for that vin number. i have it somewhere but doesn't find it for the moment. Speedy If i'll find it back i will post it here. So even the rare colors disappears sometimes from the streets!
When you see in person a "prugna" color 328, then you understand why they were often repainted in red... There are "rare" colors that look good on a 328, but IMHO prugna isn't one of them. Rare and good looking is ok and makes the car more precious and exotic: rare and bad looking is just ugly. 328 looks great in red, much more than the early cars like the Vetroresina. ciao
Just to add a few things: 66711 has a Sep. 86 date on the build plate. The US 328 GTB that preceded it is 66511 which also has a Sep 86 date on the build plate. The US 328 GTB that precedes 68233 is 67775 which has an Oct 86 date on the build plate. 68233 is the only 1987 MY Nero US 328 GTB. qedqeq can you post a picture of your car? I would like to add it to my records. -F
A friend had a QV in Rosso Metallizzato. This proved to be very difficult to sell despite being the only RHD car ever painted in this colour. In certain light conditions the car looked pink and it was obvious why this was a rare colour! Prugna is nice though.
Fortunately, the rest of the world doesn't necessarily share your opinion of prugna Tastes vary, my man... As for 77% red, mentioned above, I wonder how much Magnum, P.I. had to do with that? First TV exposure of red Ferraris to the U.S. masses, along with more magazine exposure in general to the Ferrari brand around the world. 1980s excess, $$$ abound, hot Fcars..."I want MINE in Red."
My 328 GTS is 66639, built September 86, but registered as an 87 in the US. If your car was in the US it would be an 87, but I don't know how Canadian model years work.
Yes, tastes vary. But still today most of the two seaters leave Maranello in red. Maybe there is a reason if they are red and not prugna: today there isn't Magnum P.I. on the TV anymore but the Ferrari formula 1 are still red, even if no more the old racing red they used until the eighties, due to TV screen reasons. Ciao
In any case I may have a carbed prugna 208 GTS for sale, if you like it so much: 70 k euro here in Italy plus delivery... Ciao
Yes, I have both versions of crew suits....the shift to "TV Red" is very noticable... Sorry for the hijack..
