Forgive me in advance, I did do a search...

My (now 11 year old) stock radio has troubles. Specifically, the volume control doesn't work right. It's just not responsive. Other times, I'll try to turn it down, and it will turn itself up, sometimes to full blast. This is driving me crazy. I know that there are a bunch of copper contact blocks on the inside of the tape access door and I think I may have cleaned them at one time a few years back, but can't really remember that helping all that much. Is this something you have to do at regular intervals? Is there some sort of spring that gets weak with age that causes an insufficient amount of pressure for the contact blocks when the door is closed? Any other tips on how to solve this problem?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    :)

It will either be dirty contacts on the faceplate again or rhe volume control will need to be taken apart and cleaned out. If you need help with that let me know.

If you can gain access to the contacts, Stabilant 22a, while expensive, is by far the chemical of choice to renew them. I bought mine at an autoparts store several years ago for $52/15ml but is now pushing $90/15ml. It's available online as well.

Well worth having/using as it's made for use on low current contacts, a drop leaves a film which becomes conductive and keeps the contacts from oxidizing, enhancing contact life 10-100 times.

I have resolved this issue - yay!! :-D

First of all, the contacts don't have anything to do with the volume control or the other pot (track, scan, etc.). They are only for the display. I found a car audio electronics repair shop not three miles from my house. They replaced a circuit board inside the unit that contains both pots. Took two days and ~$200. Works perfectly now.

"Short Circuit" (1-408-433-3900) is highly recommended. They were *extremely* careful when removing and reinstalling the head unit.
