Hey all, anyone know for sure whats involved in bringing a modern fcar in from Canada?
I know they are all N. American cars and it should be simple, but something tells me it won't be!! ;)

It isn't. You need to find someone in the business of making them legal. You have to comply with both the EPA and DOT, and there are differences in the cars, even those from Canada. There are quite a few such shops around, but the numbers that I've heard are in the 25 - 35k range (at least for the 360s, when they were hot).

thanks Art, I have a call into an import specialist, just figured someone here would have the full skinny. I would not be suprised if your numbers are not far off though.

EPA/DOT conformity issues are-despite "common sense" conventional wisdom-49 state issues, and then....CALIFORNIA separately-and, in addition to-the aforementioned agencies jurisdictional authority.

CARB is most important. Check with them first-NOT, I repeat NOT, an ICI(independent commercial importer).
Cal regs supercede Federal...AFTER a Federal modify and test procedeure, you will have to come to one of 2 CARB approved facilities for ANOTHER modify and test procedure...
(nacdl up in NorCal, and G&K in LongBeach...)
The cost of ownership would neccessarily be 50% discounted from a "here in SF USA delivered version," when the time, the cost of money, and of course the cost of entire exercise(Lab modification fees and the actual FTP testing fees) is calculated....

SOME late model digit 10(or is it 8...can't remember off hand anymore) are tagged as USA specification...most arabian countries are USA spec by law(theirs, not anyone elses), and Brazil, amongst others..
Most red Enzos for sale late in '07 were just such examples, and require a full MSO search as they are-technically-NOT USA cars....they are made to US specification...a big deal for collectors in the 7 and 8 figure arena...truly, a significant issue...
I looked at a used '01 360 with 9600 miles(silver/burgundy) and it well south of 6 figures....there are what...16,000 360s? They are going to start to get REALLY cheap this year...they came out in '99 after all...
In general terms, it is not a financially sound proposition..(IMHO, having done this since the late 70s) excepting for a near zero cost index of the car to start with...hope this helps.

PS-the exception, naturaly, would be the sentimentality coefficient, an impossible variable to quantify.
