Porsche saw the highest increase in proportion of female buyers this year compared to the same period in 2010.

    http://www.autoremarketing.com/trends/which-brands-best-attract-female-ownership?page=0,0

I'm guessing (because the article doesn't say) the increase is due, from most important to least:

    1. A new Cayenne truck
    2. PDK - finally a good alternative to a manual
    3. Revised color palettes that are more fashion-conscious and subtle
    4. Continued luxury trend where the interiors are as nice as anything in a BMW, Merc or Audi.

    Agreed on all your points.

That said, as a male Porsche owner, I don't see it as a bad thing. Porsche is putting out a great product these days (minus your opinion of the rear-end design of the Panamara).

Your analysis sums it up. All points are spot on with #1 being the most decisive factor.

However, I don't trust the female judgement of Porsche. Two women insulted me in the in the most horrible way yesterday as I getting into my Boxster Spyder on the 101 in Del Mar. The exchange went something like:

Housewife 1 - Oh my God, your car is so cute!

    Me - Thanks.

Housewife 2 - I know! How fun is that color! I'm not kidding, I have a dress the exact same shade of blue!

Fun (in the airhead housewife sense) and Cute are not the adjectives I thought would be associated with the car. I could have bought a Miata & saved a few bucks.

A fellow I know was considering a less maintenance intensive option to his Ferrari < $100K
    I suggested a 996GT2.
His significant other nixed the idea because of the headlight design negative thought consensus.
    GT2's are not about headlights.

GT2 qualities aside, I think the 997 version is perceived as a "prettier" car than the 996, which could account for the uptick in female customers.

I'm stereotyping, but I doubt women want a car with a big wing on the back, '70s-throwback graphics on the side, red-painted wheels, etc.

I'd agree with that conjecture, but in addition based on non-scientific observation I'd say most of the Panamera's I've seen around the Pasadena area are piloted by women as well. I wonder if that also factors in the report. On the GT2 topic, one reason I waited to get my 997 was because of the design change back to round headlights. As much as I like the 996 I was never a fan of the "elephant ear" or "broken egg" headlights as they've been called.

I would agree with this. I see a lot of Boxsters owned and driven by women in LA. I would say it's their favorite sports car.

I would say Boxsters and Panameras are primarily driven by women, and 911s and Cayennes are primarily driven by men, at least from what I see around town.

as a young man, i remember meeting a lot of women that owned and drove 356c's....they wouldn't be caught in a speedster and the 900 series didn't seem to appeal to them.....[ref girlfriend in bullett].... now a boxster is kinda just another two seater with an auto.....

Around where I live almost every four door I see is driven by a women, but I can count on one hand the amount of two doors I have seen driven by women. The women I am involved with is no Porsche lover, and thinks Ferrari's are cute. She is a pure American muscle car girl, drives a corvette.

A wife of one of the "Ferrari people" I know used to drive a manual 993 as her daily driver.
I thought this was awesome !

A co-worker of my wife has asked me to locate a used Porsche for her next year.
One condition; It has to be automatic.
    Not so awesome.

I would be happy, to put my mugshot, in any P car advertisement, that is geared toward the young hot female buyer :D.

Of course, she better know how to shift a real manual transmission.

FWIW, my wife went to great lengths to get a 2011 6-speed 997 Turbo - hated the PDK, despite my suggestion that it was the better car and the only way to get a Turbo S. Black/Black coupe.

We both detest the Cayenne - a crime against nature. When I need to haul stuff I use a mega cab dually, not some more expensive puny porsche SUV that can't tow a real race rig.

when the Cayenne first came out I couldn't stand it either. but now I like it, I'm actually considered buying a used (late 1st gen) Cayenne S. overpriced new, but used there's pretty decent value.

And I see a lot of people using Cayennes as a race trailer tow vehicle, so I'm interested in your definition of a "real race rig". fifth wheel, I assume...

My wife and I just bought a new car (I wanted a car that would be fun for her, as she's getting more interested in the hobby)

    We test drove...
    - Corvette
    - Z4 BMW
    - M3 BMW
    - 370Z
    - Ferrari 355
    - Ferrari 328
    - Lexus 250 IS
    - Cayman

... She loved the Cayman hands-down, which is funny because she never liked 911's because of the look (big butt). She drives stick, and loves tossing the Cayman around on a twisty back road. She's become an instant Porsche fan, based on the handling, the adjustable sports seats, fit/finish, and Porsche's attention to details. I asked her what she knew about Porsche before we took a test drive- "It was the car in Risky Business that went in the water" LOL (By the way... Her dream car is the Ferrari California).

    Hijacking my own thread, but:

It's incredible how the 22-26-year old Ferrari 328 still pops up on lists next to showroom new sports coupes/sedans.

What else from 1986 is still on anyone's shopping list?

the 308/328 is one of the most beautiful cars ever built. a truly timeless design.

plus, it's "analog" enough to appeal to vintage car lovers while not getting your doors blown off by Civics. and they're built like a brick s**thouse.

    great car.

No convincing needed here. Your wife has good taste. I'm starting to love the Merc 280 SLs and have considered one of those as a daily driver (with Bluetooth and iPod added).

New cars are all giant Game Boys to me.
