Hi everybody, I’m looking to book a nice ride/drive/anniversary for a weekend anywhere in New England (Mass, Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire). We've been to the awesome usual places; Inn by The Sea near Portland Maine, the Bar Harbor Inn in Bar Harbor Maine, the TopNotch Resort in Stowe Vermont, the Ocean House in Westerly Rhode Island, and the Mountain View Grand resort in Whitefield NH.

But for this one, I need (if it even exists) a much more modern setting. Still the killer scenery and beautiful roads, but not the usual, traditional, colonial setting. This will be a driving type excursion, so the surrounding rounds are important, but I'm striking out finding something for the Mrs that isn't so insanely old/traditional. She asked for younger, hipper, more modern… I said, uh….

    Any ideas very much appreciated

but you have already been there.
What about Newport? There are some great roads around there and its a great area.
Also have a look at Stow Vt.

You could also stay at a trendy place in Boston, book some spa treatments and eat at some great restaurants.

Are you more interested in modern "decor" or modern "amenities and service"? It makes a difference because probably 95% of New England Inns have "classic New England decor" because that is why people drive long distances to stay there. If you want really modern, hip decor, Boston proper is probably your best bet.

There are wide variations as to which are "classic old style New England Inns" and which are "classic inns that are fully modernized with 21st Century amenities and pampering treatment".

Another consideration is when are you planning on taking this weekend? We are at the end of ski season in Maine, NH and Vermont and into "mud season" so those states may not have much interest if you are planning on going away right now.

I was in Newport last weekend and the place is rocking already and I had a lot of fun. There is a Marriott right next to Bowen's Wharf that is pretty modern and you will not need the hassle of driving and parking your car as all of the restaurants, shops and nightlife of Newport are in easy walking distance. While it is a decent Marriott, it may not be as high end or as hip and boutiquey as you are hoping to find. Maybe others will have some better suggestions but Newport is a great place almost any time of the year.

If you are willing to accept "classic decor and modern amenities", some places that you might look into include

    the White Barn Inn in Kennebunkport, Maine;

Kennebunkport Maine Hotels & Lodging | The White Barn Inn

the Mayflower Inn at Washington, CT (this is in Litchfield County with some of the most scenic roads in New England and, by the way, pretty close to Lime Rock)

Luxury Hotel and Spa in Connecticut | The Mayflower Grace

I have not been, but have heard good things about the Mt. Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, NH, an Omni Hotel. Some great roads near there, including the famous Kancamagus Highway that takes you through the White Mountains.

New Hampshire Resorts | Omni Mount Washington Resort, Bretton Woods, NH

Kancamagus Highway in NH: Welcome to the Kancamagus Scenic Byway!

And, if you are going in the summer but are looking for a classic, elegant but bit rustic inn right on the water, look into The Basin Harbor Club near Burlington, VT

If you want more modern in Stowe, VT, try the Stowe Mountain Lodge:

Stowe Vermont Resorts, Luxury Lodging & Hotels | Stowe Mountain Lodge | Ski Resorts in Vermont

    or Twin Farms:

Twin Farms - All Inclusive Vermont Resort and Spa | Home

In Boston, I would recommend 15 Beacon or the Mandarin Oriental:

Luxury Boutique Boston Hotel | Fifteen Beacon Hotel | Boston, MA

In the Berkshires, I would recommend Wheatleigh:

Wheatleigh Hotel | Lenox, Massachusetts. Fine dining, weddings, and meetings.

Twin Farms in Vt, The Wauwinet on Nanucket, or The Point Resort if you're willing to cross over into NY.

What about MGM @ Foxwoods... I'd think pretty hip & happening

I've never stayed at the Vanderbilt in Newport, website seems up scale, passed it last night and it was busy, a lot of high end cars parked outside, a couple Ferraris too.
