OK, so I was accelerating down a slip road on the motorway followed by a boxster S. The damn thing kept up with the 355 all the way to 70... ish (he he he... yeah right!). Anyway, so this thing had been modified (and de-badged) and the acceleration was defo not 5.5 to 60.... more like 4.5, I used to drive one so I know it was definately modified. So my question is why would someone modify a Boxster S, why not just buy a good 993 Turbo, or even modify a 996?

I guess some people just prefer the shape of a boxster, but want real performance. I was just surprised, having had one myself, that you wouldn't just chop it in for something better?

    comments?

Think you answered your own question Ade.

I'm sure you can drop 911 lumps in these...

There are lots of different options, drove a 420bhp turbo'd boxster once. Very quick, very lethal.

At the time (2 years ago), that car was going for 30k - a lot less than a 993/996

RUF introduced the 3400S back in 2001, and as Andy says, they slotted in a 996 engine, albeit the 3.4. zero to sixty in about 5 second IIRC and top speed north of 170. I think it had twin rear exhausts at a time when the Boxster had a single oval one, but may be wrong on that.

The Boxster S in stnadard form is a fine car - the chassis fees like it could definitely handle up to 300 bhp with no problems.

Yeah, Id say 300 bhp tops because I had quite a few hairy moments with my boxster just with the standard power.... but that may very well have just been my lack of experience/skill :)

    it's in French Polynesia...apparently ;)

I'd imagine it's because they prefer the boxster's mid engined handling

Why, for sheer fun! I have one, with 996 engine and brakes, headers, intake, chip and hi flo cats. It is a 97 model, as they were the lightest, weighs about 2750, has gt3 seats and is one of the most fun cars I have ever driven. It is extremely fast in the corners and will literally run circles around my euro 360 on a tight track. I can take obscene speeds very deep into the tightest of corners and yet the car is simple, reliable and I don't have to worry about when parked or left alone. And yes, I can run with your on the straights and I will drive your brakes off in the corners until you let me by!!!

Some prefer mid-engine boxster chassis over rear-ended 911, so why not?

First year (1997) miled out or RMS damaged and unrepaired Boxster's are cheap in the US......salvaged 996 engines are also cheap.....2 + 2 = killer performance as evidenced by John's post.

Having tried a Boxster S (987) and a 911 (997) recently, I know exactly why he went for the modified Boxter! It is one of the most stable cars I've ever driven, and in terms of cash, smiles per pound can't come much cheaper these days (unless you live near Kings Cross).

Ah, OK that sounds like a nice cheap option. Sorry, I forgot to mention the car that I saw was only 6 months old, so doing the modification adds no resale value to the car really, also totally invalidates the warranty. Sorry that was more my point, rather than spend £40,000 on the car, plus another £10,000 in a 996 engine, when you can buy a good 996 for £50,000.

I think the comments regardling styling and handling certainly make sense, if thats your bag, then its a great car to modify, but Id do it to a '97 model for sure - as per comments here, it would make a fun car I guess

i've stopped buying 911's [until the 997 gt3 that is]. my box s with PASM and sport handles very very well, perhaps not quite as good the the CS in the bumps on curvy mtn roads... but better than gt2 and 3's stock.

P has decided to go mid engine and not a moment too soon. all we need is a $130K box s with a gt2 engine!!!

I think I'd settle for a gt3 engine! The go fast components on my car are TTP as well.

I wanted to supercharge my Boxster S but compression too high = major work. Best to get regular Boxster for approx $30k and add bolt on supercharger + exhaust + brake upgrade. For under $50K would still be good value and certainly awesome fun.

For real fun in a Porsche you need one of these

    http://www.ruf-automobile.de/english/aktuell/usedcars/car3.htm

It looks kind of familiar for some reason.......................... 425bhp, classic 964 shape and can outrun pretty much anything in the wet! and you can also fit a cement mixer in the back (with the roof down)

I do a mean 'short-all-over' .... thats about the limit of my skills :D

I was down in Brighton last weekend, and I can confirm the boxster is definately popular with the rainbow contingent down there :D its true! , but I mean the comment in good humor.
