Modifying US QV rear exhaust camshaft

    Anyone have a hint to how I can modify this US style camshaft in my 308QV. The rear exhaust camshaft have an extended shaft for driving the air injection pump (See first picture). I want to convert the camshaft to Euro style equal to my engines front camshaft showed on the second pictures. Any input appreciated.

    Drive out the pin and the end piece can be knocked out, usually they are driven out from the other end with a long rod.

    You can then get a plug machined to fit that also is held with the pin. Unfortunately you'll still be left with that extension sitting proud. Otherwise you have to machine the camshaft and also fabricate a blanking plate. Cams are hardened so machining them would be a right PITA.

    +1 -- just getting a euro QV cam would be way less work/effort.

    Thanks for the helpful replies. I have bought a Euro blanking plate with oil drain outlet so I understand from your input, that I need to cut, thread and plug the camshaft.

    It would not have to be threaded. Any of the cams that drive air pumps, distributors etc just have pinned in plugs. No reason you cannot cut off end of cam and install and seal a non threaded plug in place.

    The euro ends at the journal, so a pin would be in the journal. Threaded plug would be best, but what a PITA. Way easier to just source a euro camshaft.

    The current length with removed drive looks too long to use the euro end plate.

    Thanks for the input Rifledriver. I will check the clearance below the end plate and see if it is possible to leave enough shaft left for installing a pinned plug with an o-ring. That will be an neat solution that can be produced with an angel grinder and a stationary drilling machine (It's not straight forward to set up a camshaft in a lathe). I hope that the end bore in the camshaft is a proper drilled / machined hole so it can seal on a o-ring - Time will show. Finding a Euro camshaft is not as easy as it sounds unless you want to buy a new from Maranello parts and it doesn't come cheap.Used QV cams are as rare as hens teeth's.

    The pin would not need to be in the journal. That wold be stupid. The plug would deprive the last bearing of oil. There is room beyond the bearing.

    Not sure who often you have tried in the last few years of finding a specific usable used cam for a V8 but you could spend a lot of time doing it. Been there a few times. A decent machinest can have that cam converted in an hour or so.

    If you want to eliminate the rotary seal (and potential leak point) on that end you need to shorten to cam to fit inside the other style of end cover. I cut it short and then drilled and tapped it for an M16 plug.
