I recently started with the cigar thing. Mike gave me a humidor (thanks Mikey! :) ) that I have been filling with some nice cigars each time I go to the cigar shop. The humidor has the green spongy thing that I pour the humidor liquid into/on, then it sits in the humidor. The other day, I noticed that the humidor was a bit too humid (from the needle on the humidity reader) and when I opened the humidor a few cigars had some moldy looking things on them.

Is this common? What do I do??? How do you keep the humidor at the right temp without putting in and taking out the humid-thingy??

Take out the cigars with mold immediately!! Throw them away. It is extremely unhealthy to smoke mold.

If you caught this early, the humi and other cigars may be salvagable. Remove the cigars and let the humidor dry out entirely. I might even lightly sand the interior. Once this process is done, rehumidify the humidor. You should get a new humidification device that uses crystals so that this does not occur again. Monitor the humidity more often and open the humidor at least once a week for a few minutes to let it breathe. Good luck.

Posting a pic of said cigars may clarify if this is mold or not...

Butner is correct if it is indeed mold. BUT!!!! It may not be mold. It could be what we call "bloom" or "plume."

Good news: You most likely don't have mold! The white dusty powder that you have on your cigars is something called "Plume" (or Bloom) and Plume is a good thing. Plume is a sign that your cigars are well maintained and properly aging as the white dust is actually crystallized oils from the wrapper leaves of your cigars. Plume is perfectly harmless and all you should do is dust them off when you want to smoke the cigar. If there is an excessive buildup of plume on your cigars, you may want to dust them off just to keep them and your humidor neat and tidy.

I'm pretty sure what you have is plume. Genuine cigar mold is often blue/green or teal in colour and leaves a stain on the cigar after you wipe it off. If you wipe the white dust off your cigars and there is no stain on the cigars, then they're fine. Real tobacco mold often forms when the humidity is too high so to be on the safe side, check your hygrometer to be sure that the humidity is correct. If the humidity level is reasonable and the white powder doesn't leave any discolorated stains on your cigars, then everything is OK.
