Even when its not the best Tipo 26 (body, front-axle, engine are new. Rebuild by Peter Shaw for Mr. Sutherland) 8C-3000 #3001 was for me THE car of the weekend. A very beautiful car! Its now owned by Josef-Otto Rettenmaier as part of his fantastic Maserati prewar-collection!

    Ciao!

It was a 250F-engine that was given by Maserati to the Colotti-people who made and developed the 250F-concept. Unfortunately it was a more or less private operation and therefore underfinanced. But the car was the ultimate version of the "250F".
For me the dice between my buddy Barrie (TechMec) and Tony (Dino) was THE action of the day! Fantastic!

To get a closer view about Barrie`s abilities behind the wheel: here comes a photo I took in 2001 when he drove #1120 in Monaco. There are many good drivers around who can drive offset-camber in turns - but to do this in the small tight "Rascasse"-corner in Monaco is veeeeery special. Barrie did it!

is there anybody who can explain why 3001 has stamped 3002 AND 3001 stamped on the rear right frame member?

    You mean this!

Well, THATS a VERY good question! I think only Peter Shaw could give a correct answer to this.

    My thesis is:
The 3002 is stamped on the Rettenmaier-car on the correct position. The 3001 ist on a very unusual position.
Interesting is that 3002 has its number on the correct position stamped.

It could be possible, that Maserati changed both chassis and restamped 3002 to 3001 while the newer chassis became the no. 3002 from the beginning when it was sold to Birkin.

As most of the T26 dissapeared its a well known thesis amongs the historians of this type that Maserati produced only a limited number of cars starting with 2-digit-no. and later used the same frame with modified or upgrated mechanicals and restamped it to a 4-digit number.

This means that much less cars were build than officially listed! Is the history of the 50ies cars very confusing quite often - the story of the T26`s is completely GaGa!

    Ciao!

Thanks, yes, I took exactly the same picture while in the paddock...what I think is also nice is that nobody is trying to cover up things by putting thick layers of paint over one of the numbers. (for more pictures of the car on track, have a look at our coverage of the event at ultimate-car-page.com (skip the hyphens, F-chat blocks a direct link....)
