I just got 2 great tickets to the May race but obviously at this late date am finding it impossible to get a room anywhere in Monte Carlo- Do not want to spend 7,500 per person for a tour, and (perhaps) stupidly passed on a room for 4 nights for 10,000 euros. Would prefer NOT to stay in Nice and commute if I can help it. Long shot, BUT does anyone have any advice....thanks so much. Karin

Stay in Nice and just catch the train to and from the race. I was planning on going to Monaco this year also and then my plans fell thru. I was planning on staying in Beaulieu-ser-mur it is half way between Nice and Monaco.

Beaulieu sur Mer is a nice enough town, and a short train ride to MC. If you end up staying in Nice, just be sure to allow ample time for the train ride on race day. Although it's a short trip (normally about 15 minutes), you may need to wait through several full trains before you can squeeze on. Another caveat- if you plan to stick around in MC for dinner or a trip to the Casino (if only to see the many terrific cars there), be sure to check the time of the last train back to Nice- it's usually pretty early (11:00 p.m. or so), but if you miss it you can take a cab back to Nice. If you want other options, check hotels in Menton. Good luck!

As long as it's a nice day, after the race go down to the public beach and catch up on your tan/do some reading/go for a swim. It's worth waiting a few hours for the crowds at the train station to die down a little, plus the artificial beach they made is pretty cool. Instead of sand it's tiny little pebbles, so the water is crystal clear and you don't get sand everywhere.

Looks like the really good places in Nice are filled up too now-Waiting till midnite to make some more calls-may end up in one of those "tour packages". Speaking of which, has anyone experience with a tour?

If you do end up in Nice, keep in mind that the nicer places down by the Promenade des Anglais aren't very near the train station- you'll need a cab to the station. The neighborhood around the station, however, isn't too nice. I still think that if you can't line up a room in Nice or one of the small towns east of there, Menton might be a good bet- it's not far from MC, and big enough to have a decent number of hotels. I assume you've already tried the Marriott in Cap d'Ail and the various small hotels in Beausoleil, all of which are within walking distance of MC?

If you can't get tickets directly from the Automobile Club de Monaco (they sometimes sell out early, at least for the good seats like in the K grandstands) you might try Just Tickets in the UK. I've used them before and they seem pleasant and reliable.

You could try Eze, which is about 10 km from Monaco and 2 stops on the train, although if you stay in Eze village you'll need a car to get down to Eze sur Mer where the train station. There are a couple of cheap hotels there and then a couple of really expensive ones too. I imagine that for the GP they'd be all be bloody expensive though.

If you don't mind spending longer on the train on the way there (forget about driving, the traffic will be mental and there's nowhere to park) then try finding somewhere west of Nice - Juan Le Pins, Golfe Juan, etc.

we stay at the hotel darcy. two stars, nothing fancy but quite reasonable. it's three blocks from the train station in nice. i wouldn't recommend the train though. you would be better off renting an economy car; a smart or something that size, and driving over it's a wonderful drive and you can get to monaco before the first trains arrive in the morning. parking isn't much trouble if you don't mind a bit of a walk no longer than at indy or montreal.

To book something in Monaco I need to wire transfer the amount in full for the hotel. (No cancellations at this late date!) I may have found something but need to wait till tomorrow to know for certain. Has anyone stayed in Monaco before, and what was it like. In the event we stay in Nice the driving from Nice sounds do-able, I was in Montreal 2 years ago, and it wasn't a bad walk from the parking area.

If you can land a room in MC (and don't mind paying for it), grab it. Staying in town is great- the atmosphere is terrific, and gets more electric every day as Sunday approaches. I've stayed in MC for the race many times (and will be there again this year, as usual), so feel free to PM me if you have specific questions.

    I can highly recommend Menton.

It's the other side of Monaco to Nice, a short train ride away and a lovely little town with plenty of nice restaurants and a good atmosphere.

It fills up too, but I got a very good rate at a nice hotel the Thursday before the race!

Only downside is that there are plenty of youths on mopeds most of the evening - I'm a lover of nice noise, but these guys are a pain in the arse.

The race itself is definitely one to have on your "must see" list. I was sat right where Sato's engine blew last year.

After the race, have a meander round the town and go to the Tip Top bar (simply because you can :)) for a beer. Later in the evening, the crowds at the station die down.

We stayed in Cannes, which is even further away than Nice, and it wasn't too bad. Getting off the train every day in Monaco, hearing, seeing, smelling, F1 in the air, made the memory of the train ride disappear.

When you go, let me know if Le Texan, a Mexican restaurant in Monaco, is still there. Thanks

As of my last visit to MC (May, '04) the notorious Le Texan was still there. Walk out of the front door, turn right, and you'll bump into Monaco Motors, the local Ferrari dealer.

Decent enough Tex-Mex food, and (at least years ago) a hang-out for drivers, team personnel, and hangers-on. I used to go there every year for Thursday night dinner, since Friday was a quiet day at the Monaco GP (practice on Thursday) and you'd see drivers hanging out. These days, they all seem occupied with sponsor events and don't hang in the local restaurants as much, so I only go by occasionally. Spoke (briefly) with Ricardo Patrese there some years back, and saw Damon Hill once at the bar.

Notorious Le Texan: If I remember correctly, the restaurant was started by young Mr. Grimaldi and a few friends after attending school at Princeton(?) and discovering Mexican cuisine. All I know, that after a few weeks of German and French beer, I could hardly wait for a Coors Light, which they had at Le Texan.

Savoring that cold brew made watching Senna and Prost even better.

Not sure I buy that old story about Albert starting Le Texan- the actual owner is (was?) a blond woman from Texas whose name I've now forgotten, and she also had a Le Texan in Paris too for a while. In any case, Albert IS persistently said to own a piece of Stars & Bars, another nearby American-style restaurant/bar that gets lots of action during race week. As for the Coors Light, well, to each his own!
