Two drivers have ended up in the Monaco harbor, Alberto Ascari in 1955 and someone else. Ascari lived to tell the tale, but unfortunately not for long, as he died testing a Ferrari sportscar at Monza three weeks later. Is it possible for an F1 car to end up in it today?

If Kimi doesn't set his emergency brake and it rolls off the back of his boat? Absolutely!

I'd say it's possible. Ralf drove right over the engine cover of Rubens in Australia launching himself in the air. If something like that happens right after the tunnel exit or thereabouts, someone could go in the water.

Kimi's car flew in the air in 2004 around the Monaco pool after Sato's engine blew around that corner. I think Kimi's tires touched anothers and it just climbed up the fence. If it happened on the side with the water, it's possible.

I'd say it's possible only in the sense that anything is possible, if only in the least of ways. Rescue isn't an issue, though, since F1 has strict demands. Even in the infield pond at Montreal they're required to have divers on the water. And there's no way a car could ever get there.

I thought Ascari dunked one into a swimming pool.

It would take me more than 4 days to even get into a car after that...

I love to speculate about the stories behind those great images taken with antedeluvian news cameras.

Cars begin to collide at the tunnel, and a thousand flash bulbs go off. Suddenly, one car flies into the air, headed for the water. And the only photog not changing flashbulbs or winding his film is the hung-over guy looking up late, saying "What? What?". :p

Rescue not an issue? Try this...

Imagine the extreme scenario where the car lands at the bottom of the water, UPSIDE-DOWN, and the divers are unable to extract the unconscious driver trapped with his harness in the cockpit, and the lifting equipment arrives too late to save him from drowning.

My point is that F1 applies overkill to any potential hazard, water included. Remember all the blathering about the chicane at Monza? F1 micro analyzes any potential track-related risk and covers it.

"Am I wearing clean underwear?" ;)

From my own few impromptu "off-course excursions", my experience is that you're fighting for vehicle control the whole time it's moving: despite broken push-links, severed brake lines, shattered rims, or off the surface elevations. But maybe that's just me.
