Yep. It was definitely a Monday.

The garbage truck backed into the carport and collapsed it on top of my car. If I was an admirer of irony I could explain how this shouldn't have happened. I was supposed to be out of town but canceled the trip, I could have left for work on time and I would have already been gone or I could have already moved into the new house.

Not the way you want to start your Monday. I bet the truck driver felt real bad. I like the photo of you pacing around the car trying not to scream.

Not a very sturdy looking carport anyway. I'm suprised one of your neighbors hadn't knocked it down earlier by running into one of those posts.

That blows. What's the damage like? I'm sure any damage will be covered by the driver or company.

Garbage companies are fairly lucrative. Make sure you take them to court and get enugh money out them to buy you an Enzo! Just imagine if you were in the car or if you were close by.

    Sorry about the damage!

I went and got an estimate on my own that came out to about $3000. All the damage is to the roof just over the passenger door. The roof skin will have to be replaced as well as the structural beam over the door since it is bent so far that the roof has pulled away from the top of the door. No other part of the car was damaged.

The city's insurance appraiser came by yesterday and I should get a $ number from them in a day or two. So far the city assures me they will take care of everything as well as cover a rental. I have no reason to doubt them yet but until I get their estimate and take the car in for repair I can't say if we're going to fight.

I spoke to my own insurance company at length about my options and I could have my own insurance take care of it if I feel the city drags its feet. I'd have to pay my deductable of course but I would be reimbursed that amount once my insurance company recovered funds from the city.

Interesitng about the top of the car being replaced. Will would know more about this than I would, but I'd assume if the top or one of the pillars was damaged in any way it would be an automatic total due to structural/safety issues.

    Ouch. This sucks.

Last night I was on a highway and while merging onto an exit ramp, I heard a sharp *CRACK* like a gunshot. I glanced left just in time to see a small object (a small 1.1ft microwave or appliance???) come flying off the side corner of a silver Honda Odyssey minivan and launch in a spinning arc right into the front of my car. It hit with a loud crunch. I was already leaving the freeway when I looked ahead to see a pickup truck with an open bed on the shoulder down the highway, loaded with a bed and other belongings and two guys scrambling to put things back in the truck.

Unfortunately I was in a split second decision whether to stop and hike over to get their information to get their insurance to repair my bumper or continue to my appointment... and I continued on. It's just a large gash/paint rub along the front of the bumper. I have to get my bumpers repainted anyway since parallel parkers in my neighborhood have already destroyed them for me.

Worse things have happened to garbage truck drivers. A few years ago, near where I live, a garbage truck was picking up the dumpster at a local convenience store. Something wasn't going right, and the driver got out and went to the front of the truck to check on something. For some reason, the truck went into gear and ran over the driver. As if that wasn't bad enough, the truck rolled about 20 feet forward through the wooden fence surrounding the store lot. And even more unfortunately, the land dropped off about FIFTY feet straight down on the other side of the fence. The truck roared over the cliff and landed in the back yard of the house below. The driver was killed somewhere along the way.
