Mondi 3.2 engine removal. Steps?

Im going to start to get my hands dirty and start to drop the engine on my 87 mondi 3.2 cab. Ive search the threads and see alot of useful threads about lifting car, etc, but does anyone have a step-by-step procedure or thread that shows clearly the easiet removal.

I have never done it so it dont know all the steps for electrical, brake lines, coolant, fuel, etc. I know it is pretty straight foward but if you have the steps in front of you it can cut the time way down from trying to figure out each little thing.

I ordered a shop cd from ebay but didnt really have what I was hoping for. I would love if someone had pictures of each step. I will take well documented notes and pics and will post as I go. Thanks for any help!!

OK, you peaked my interest, just having had mine done the other non-DIY expensive way. So go for it. Let's see some pictures already. lol!

The guys on this site are so awesome. They are walking living shop manuals. Remember, taking it apart is easy, putting it back together right is the challenge!

 

If you have not downloaded this large pdf file (80+Mb 325 pages) do so IMMEDIATELY. It is not a scan of the workshop manual but is a first generation file, the highest quality digital Ferrari document that I've ever come across.

Below is excised section about engine removal. Know that there is a very detailed 32 step procedure prior to these figures on how to remove your engine. By the by, this method of dropping the engine by attaching casters is COOL.

Boy, that pdf is a must have! It is like Ferrari Shop 101 for dummies! It is so complete and I cant see anything that isnt extremely clear and to the point. The 32 steps look pretty straight foward, but I think it would be alot easier for someone who hasnt done it to have step-by-step with pictures, and, seeing Im that person, I will post my pics for each step.

My challenge is that I dont have a lift in my garage and am going to do it with some creativity. Imagine a floor jack, motorcycle jack, and about 12 solid cynder blocks a 2 4x4.

Im off to get some fresh latex gloves, batteries for camera, beers for my nerves, and chips for me belly. Here is what it started like sitting properly in my garage:

I finally had the gusto and time to drop my 3.2.....It wasnt THAT bad. I did all the steps as per the shop manual and took LOTS of pics. Once I had everything disconnected I rigged a support out of two wheel dollys and 4 4x4s. I lowered the car to fit subframe on the support and adjusted height of car until load was even and I could unblot the 16 frame bolts in front and 4 in the rear. It fit beautifully and the bolts slid right out.

Next was to raise car high enough to get subframe out. I actually went through passenger wheel well as I gained about 4 inches going through there, plus I goofed and didnt have enough room to roll out the back as car in air was static. It fit out nicely but did have to pivot engine to fit. It fit by about 1 inch....

I took lots of photos to document as well as make a step-by-step proceedure that I will compose when Im done.

Now that its out Im removing heads but don't see any procedures in any threads that are detailed enough for me to feel comfortable, nor is there anything in manual. If anyone can tell me what to do play-by-play. Here are so photos so far. (Dont hoist car like this if you live in California; earthquarkes lol!)

Wow, that is a beautiful Mondial. I ordered a 4-post life last week so I can do ours next year. After seeing your block set-up I am really glad I ordered the lift. I am sure your set-up is safe but it looks really scary. I wouldn't feel comfortable seeing my wife's cat under there.

I see how to remove intake and injection system, but should I keep it all together so I dont have to remove injectors?

Also, head looks tricky.....do I need a special wrench to get bolts as they look unaccesable? I remember seeing one for 2v engines but not sure for 3.2

Im hoping someone can chime in who has done a 3.2 or quatro. Thanks in advance.

a few things:

Firstly, Cinder blocks are liable to just crumble - please either get some concrete or timber under there.

Secondly, why do you want to take the heads off? Unless there is a really good reason I would leave well alone. If you do need to do it, yes there is a special tool (see http://www.hillengineering.co.uk/catalog/95971393-av1393-p-363.html?osCsid=cc1df72793c88ac54fccb95f676664fc )

If you want to remove the inlet manifolds and Plenum then undo the injector pipes from the injectors and remove the 20+ nuts around the base of the manifolds.

You can take the plenum off first if you want but be aware there are 8 small metal spacers inbetween the manifolds and the plenum & if you drop one of those down the manifold it would be bad!. The safest thing to do therefore is to loosen (but not remove) tha 8 nuts that secure the plenum to the manifolds & this will allow enough play to lift the whole assembly (plenum+manifolds) off together.

 

Im not sure why everyone is so nervous about my blocks. I have spacers (magazines) between each block. These blocks are made to hold houses. I have lifted small buildings many a time much higher on powdery sand as a foundation. I have done it over 40 times with no problems. The car without subframe is about 1600 pds. Thats pretty light considering the compression strength of about 2000 psi. In other words one block would support about 20 cars. No worries!

 

Oh yeah.....Zero compression on all four back cylinders and slightly off in front. Have to rework heads.

Then fair enough. You'll need that tool to get the head nuts off. I would think you can get one from Daniel at RIcambi because he sells all the HE stuff in the States. Its in the 328 WSM as to how you torque the heads back down - its an initial torque setting followed by turning through an angle if I recall correctly.

 

Just an observation - But I think your set up is very dangerous. Years ago I spent $1000 bucks on a drive over scissor lift. I could safely pull motors on my 911's and 914's no problem. I am sure it would work on your Mondial. Cart under sub chassis - sub frame bolts undone. Raise car roll out sub asym.

Please be careful we had a guy killed here in Savannah a week ago when his car fell off cinder blocks. You will get spoiled and spend the $3,000 on a side post next I did it 7 yrs ago - best tool I have.

Somehow that pic reminds me a lot of when I occasionally used to drive through some really bad areas of Philly and I would pass a car sitting on cinder blocks with all of its wheels stolen. At least you still have yours! All I can say is WOW! Agree with the peanut gallery about your stand but now that you're there, se la vie and let's see more pics please. Jon, you mention no compression on all four rear bank cylinders. Did the car ever start for you? Did she turn over?

So I got the back head off today finally and it came off like a breeze. Im assuming the heads have been off before because they just lifted right off. I found every exhaust valve bent and I believe only 2 intake valves.

I had zero compression on all 4 back cylinders and moderate compression on front. The timing belt on back ironically was dead on and had jumped slightly on the front. Thats how I bought it. My guess is the owner had the heads redone several years back and didnt set tensioners tightly. It drove for a short while and back belt jumped. He had it reset and drove it probably just on the front bank. Drove it for a while like that and then the front belt jumped.

Judging by the amount of carbon the car drove for a while with the bent valves on the back bank. I will pull the front head tomorrow but Im guessing it wont be as bad. Probably 4 more bent valves?

What are your thoughts and Im trying to find the best price on valves and so far Ive got Ricambi for $49 each. They want $340 for EACH head gasket which is high but not terrible. I see some on ebay for $140 and assume they are crap. But I would LOVE to hear from anyone who knows a good aftermarket source.....Thanks!

FYI a 4 post lift will not be good for this operation. Either a scissors or a 2 post will do the trick. With the 4 post you drive up on the ramps and the engine cradle can't drop down.

As to the cement blocks I wouldn't trust them not only in compression but they are metastable if you were to lean on the car.

 

Folks, the car is not going anywhere. To make everyone happy I did put wood blocks as a back up. Oh, and my bike is under there for added cushion if it does fall.

It's my bicycle......and my 2600 psi gas pressure washer. Who would own an electric pressure washer any way. Max 1500 psi. I spit harder than that.......
