Looking for thoughts on where to start diagnosing problems with my 1986 3.2 Mondial Cab starting problems. Turns over but won't fire easily and then when it runs won't hold an idle and seems to only running on half the cylinders. Also strong smell of unburned gas when it shuts down. Car has sat on a trickle charger most of the winter in the garage.

Will start debugging this weekend with a friend, starting with the ignition system, but if someone have already been down this path I would appreciate input.

    Thanks in Advance.

You've answered your own question -- first check for presence/absence of ignition on each bank during the brief bad running ;)

Seriously, it's the first decision point. If ignition is missing, you'd go after things like the coil, power module and dist rotor and cap on that side. If ignition is OK (and assuming that you have a US version -- please confirm/deny), feel if the frequency valve (a.k.a. metering valve) is "buzzing" when the engine is running (it should be) -- if it's dead, you'll be checking for the presence/absence of the +12V power coming from the protection relay.

You may want to check for a serious vacuum leak, could be the 12 mm hose on the bypass valve by the coolant filler tank. They blow off periodically.

Where do I find the power module and frequency valve (a.k.a. metering valve) ? Also where does one get a shop manual for these cars?

The power modules are mounted on the coils, and see post #8 in this thread for a jpeg of the FV:

    http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=146188

(and that's a good thread for you to review if your FV is "dead")

You should read your OM first (Section 3), and, for a WSM, FerrariUK has had really reasonable F literature prices -- otherwise places like www.ferraribooks.com

After switching the whole coil modules and going through the rest of the ignition system I narrowed down my issue today to being a bad "power module" on top of the coil for the bank that does not fire. Does anyone know what the part number is for this and where I can buy one (or two). Aldo is there a replacement for the rubber boots that cover the wiring connected to these modules?

So far I have only seen the whole coil module for sale at Ricambi.
