For the oil temp guage, yes you can disconnect the wire at the sender and ground it to see if the guage moves. Had to do this on my T a long time ago. Problem eventually turned out to be bad grounding around the sender. fixed by cleaning the area around it to establish a better ground. Also eventually added an extra ground strap to the base of the oil tank.

For the water temp, I would suspect the same is true regarding the test technique above, but I don't know for sure.

I will tackle that ground (boating pun!) one night this week, in a way, it is a relief driving in the summer with a dead coolant temp. guage, otherwise I am fixated on it in hot beach traffic....this way, out of mind...no stress, I will wait for the ole' smoke signal type guage ..or a passerby yelling that the car is on fire...had that in the 308 once...however, the sender is a cheap bosch part so may go with a replacement if the test turns up good guage , bad sende...thanks..

    on a 348...
I know it is not the rad sensor that fires the fans....I think it is not the two "micro switches " on each side of the middle of the "V" under the intake plenum that talk to the ECU...I was told it is under the intake plenum and it is the "upper" sensor...I see the oil sensor under the oil filter ..I hope it is not in the front of the engine...but with luck it probably is and beside my chiropractor needs to pay for his summer vacation
