Greetings! I'm relatively new to the forum, lurking mostly, and have been trying to get info on that "1st Ferrari". I spotted the '82 Mondial 8 at FoD, and wondered if anybody knew about this car. I sent an email to them earlier in the day. Who would you folks recommend I speak with? I'm alot more confident in my first purchase since the Bentley/Maserati dealer across the river in St. Louis recently became factory certified. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Rob
Talk to Bill Orth - he was very helpful to me on my last visit to FoD. Of course he's a dealer, and wants to sell you the car, but I wouldn't question his honesty. You should know - and probably do - that the Mondial 8 is one of the "unloved" Ferraris, meaning it's a "nice" car but not one with much performance capability or investment potential (if you care about that).
I second talking to Derek. I saw the car there on Saturday, but did not take a close look at it, sorry.
Thanks for all the replies guys! I'll definetly be calling Derek when I get a couple of minutes. I understand the Mondial 8 being unloved, but being 6'6" doesn't leave many options. So I'm stuck (not a bad thing) with the marquee, rather than a 456 until all those bloody loans are paid off. 308/328 are great, but the sardine can feeling reminds me of the MRI tube. Anyway thanks again. Rob
Here's a copy of the reply I got from Mike @ FoD. Any thoughts with your collective wisdom? Any comments would be greatly appreciated. I've got some time blocked off tomorrow to give Derek a call. Thanks Rob Hi Doctor Rob, I rather doubt youll find this car comfy. Headroom might be ok, legroom probably awful and youd reposition the seat on the rails. We did a 30K/5 year service. The belts were original and there isnt much history involved, this car never saw a major service. Oil was very clean when we drained it out, but anything technical was simply not done. Weve not done any pre-purchase inspection for anyone yet, the car hasnt been out there for very long. The paint is original, pretty tired, has some checkering that wont show up in any photos. Priced in the high 20s. Regards, Mike
Rob, I was there today when your email came in and Mike asked Bill what to say about the height issue. There was a discussion that the seat rails could be modified to allow more leg room. Big feet can be a problem in these cars as well. Have you tried sitting in one? I only saw the car from a distance, so can't make any comments. Paint checkering would be pretty common for this vintage. They are all good guys there who won't feed you BS about this car. In the high 20's you should be able to find a 3.2 Mondial coupe which is much better looking and performing, but they normally sell cars at market value there. Check out cartraderonline. They always seem to have a bunch of Mondials listed. Dave
Im with Dave here regarding the value. A Mondial 8 in that condition is worth somewhere in the teens. I paid 27,500 2 years back for my 3.2 which is in great shape.
Thanks for all the help guys! I appreciate the info on price. I was figuring somewhere between 18k-21k for the Mondial 8, but wasn't quite sure. I knew high 20's was 3.2 territory. Rob
