When I filled up my 84 MQV for the first time i noticed a strong smell after leaving it in the garage - but no leaks. Had the car out of the garage and it was on a slope (left side down) and then I notcied some gas under the car. Drove it for awhile and once the gas level got down some both the smell and leak disappered. Appreciate suggestions how to go about this.

Typically, there are many (low-pressure) rubber fuel hoses connections that are normally not wetted (unless near full and the chassis is tipped as you report). You've most likely got an aged, cracked rubber line somewhere (although it's not unheard off to have the tanks pierced by an overlong screw from an electronics installation ;)). See your OM, there's usually some decent figures showing the various fuel lines in either the "fuel system" section or the "fuel evaporation control" section (if so equipped).

The suspects would be those connections just near the top level of the tanks (e.g., for a US version -- the 4 lines coming down from item D, the big connection on the fuel filler side, or the connections of the smaller hose that eventually goes up to "A"):

My suggestion: DON'T DRIVE A CAR THAT SMELLS OF GAS! I almost fell off my chair...you need to check all your gas line and the filler hoses. Leaks are most common at the hose clamps so I would start there.
