Hi all--I'm finally getting to changing the belts and tensioners on my '87 Mondial. I'm following Birdman's great belt changing write-up, which is written for the 308 series. It appears to me that the Mondial A/C bracket is different, and I can't even loosen it to get the belt off. I've found a fair number of threads on 3X8 A/C compressor removal, but none for the Mondial.

It seems to me that the unit should pivot on the axis of bolt #9 on the attached image when screw #29 is turned. Does anyone know if that is correct? When I turn screw 29, it just backs up out of the container, when I think that the compressor should be pivoting downward to loosen the belt. The two bolts that hold the compressor to bracket 5 are loose, but it's not budging.

Or does the entire bracket pivot if the bolt in the hole just above the #13 is loosened? Sorry, I'm not at the car now and didn't get that good a look at it last night, although at the time the pivoting on the screw #9 seemed logical.

I'm assuming I need the belt off to take any lateral force off the studs that hold the compressor in. Does anyone have some good suggestions? Am I missing something,or is this in-fact impossible?

Thanks for any suggestions. I'll eventually reveal the mileage and age of the existing belts-I just haven't calculated it yet. They're pretty old, though.

Solved--it does pivot as I thought. Screw 21 (not 29) had a pinch nut on the back that kept it from sliding up and down.

But it doesn't seem to slacken the belt enough to get it off, and if it did, is there enough of a gap that it could be slipped between the compressor and the belt covers?

Thoughts on how to proceed? M next step I believe is to pull the studs and slide the whole thing out-although it seems there has to be a better way.

I removed bolt 21 completely, and was able to pivot just enough to replace the belt, needed to sort of "roll" the new belt onto the compressor pulley. It is kind of a pain to put bolt 21 back, as access is tight an awkward, but with the usual fiddling its doable. I also used a thin, short stubby wrench to get at the bracket bolts.
