So I'm working on the '82 M 8, and found that we had virtually no spark. Working our way backwards, tested the coils and they appear to be defective (primary tests okay, secondary winding tests as shorted out). We need to replace them with something but having trouble finding the right thing. The stock coils are Marelli BAE 209B. Can't find them anywhere in the US. Has anyone found a suitable replacement for them??

    Thanks,
    Steve

Just a follow-up question to be sure: What ohm readings should we expect (range) for the primary and secondary windings? We're getting 1.3 ohm in the 200 setting on the multimeter for the primaries, and 3.77 on the 20K setting on the multimeter. Does anyone know the spec range for the resistance on the coils? Marelli BAE 209B, 1982 Mondial 8.

Superformance UK shows them as available from about $150 to $260 each. I've purchased from them before with good results, depending on the parts you're getting the shipping cost can be a little high, but with something as lightweight and small as coils it shouldn't be that much.

As a follow-up, any suggestions on how to test the Marelli Digiplex units to verify that they are working properly??

(If you've lost both banks on the Digiplex system) The first thing to do is measure the AC voltage coming from the RPM flywheel sensor (when plugged in) during starter motor cranking - should be about 2V AC. You can also make a preliminary resistance measurement of the unplugged RPM flywheel sensor = should be about 700 Ohms.

Your coil resistance measurements don't seem horrible (although I have no values to share), but it does hit me as a bit strange that they would've both failed to the same (not open) value. What do you you mean by "virtually no spark"? Literally no spark, or a spark occurs but it seems weak?
