    hello,
i've got an 83 mondial. today accelerating out of a 30mph limit it splutted and back fired twice about twenty miles later, going up a very steep hill it cut out for a couple of seconds then did a huge back fire. but was then fine till i got where i was going. when i got back in (about an hour later) it took 5 or 6 goes before it started going back down the steep hill it cut out and wouldn't bump start. i pulled over and after 5 or 6 goes it started but wasn't running quite right. a few miles further on the oil light came on. i stopped went and got some oil and a couple of hours later checked it. the dip stick is showing oil upto the max and it started fine but still seem a bit lumpy. i have just had trouble with the fuse box and an auto electrician by passed the fuel pump relay. if any of that makes any sense has anybody got some ideas?
    many thanks,
    stef.

    Battery going dead?
(If your backfireing, your getting fuel. Thus, nice patch on your fuel pump, , unless, your fuel pump is internally shorting and draining your battery.)

Sounds like an intermittant crank sensor. mine did the same exact thing. Does the tach go nuts when it happens? If so, it's the crank sensor on the bank that runs the tach (can't remember which one, but look at the schematic) and if not, it's the other bank. Very easy to troubleshoot.

Check the DC resistance of each sensor with a multi-testor. They should be around 600 ohms. A flaky one will sometimes be hard to find because it may be OK at room temp and then get flaky when warm. Do a search, there are a few threads on troubleshooting it.
