    I've been driving my '84 Mondial in cold weather, really for the first time. If ambient temps are below about 40 degrees, the car idles around 2600 rpm for ~5-10 minutes or ~5 miles, then calm down and idles around 1000 rpm unless it cools off again. Seems excessive/long to me. Is this something I should expect, or something I should have fixed? If the latter, any idea where the issue may be? Thanks.

    Your car is getting to much fuel from that cold-start valve.

    Try this : take of that blue contact on the cold-start valve and start your engine when cold. Do it like always...dont touch the acelarator. When your car is starting without problem, leave that contact of. Put some tape arround it, and around that cold-start valvecontact, to avoid moisture getting in to it.
    Your car dont need it to start.

    That is standard behavior for 1980-81 US 308s. Restriction in the vacuum hose out of the auxillary air valve will reduce the idle rpm. My understanding that it was changed on subsequent years, you might checkout the AAV.

    OK -- since your '84 MondialQV is a US version, it only has the AAV to add extra air during cold-running. The AAV has an internal electric heater so your idle staying high for 5~10 minutes seems a bit longish (the AAV will also absorb heat directly from the engine, but that is a slower process that could take 5~10 minutes). Things to check first:

    1. Unplug the AAV and measure the DC resistance between the two electrical contacts on the AAV side (this is measuring the resistance of the internal heater) -- should be something like 50 ohms to a few hundred ohm. A "bad" reading would be many KOhms to infinite ohms.

    2. With the AAV still unplugged, measure the DC voltage between the two pins in the harness side of the connector with the engine running after cold start-up -- should be +12V.

    I'm working on my '83 Euro's FI right now and have just tested the AAV. It works fine. I have been told that the high idle speed on the US cars was to heat the cat. The Euro cars are far less intense at warmup. Having studied the FI in detail, your car is working right.

    FWIW, engine speed, including idle, is set by AIR not fuel. Fuel is supplied to match the air. Therefore, look to air supply to understand engine speed. The AAV does just that.

    And FWIW, the cold start injector works ONLY during start and enriches the mixture for start only.

    Rick -- You are bringing in an issue that only applies to '80 to '83 US V8 models -- i.e., they have the cold start air valve (in addition to the AAV) that will hold the idle quite high for a few minutes (for the reason you mentioned). An '84 US Mondial QV is more similar to your '83 euro -- it only has an AAV -- so I wouldn't call 5~10 minutes at 2600 RPM idle "working right".
