Ever wonder "What if the Mondial had a glass engine cover" like these cars? I found these custom works on a Mondial, TR, and a 348 with flat engine glass covers. How cool! Comes standard on 360/430 spiders and F50. Excluded are the F coupes with glass see through engine bays. Interestingly enough, I would if these guys can custom make one for a Mondial. TR glass lid: http://www.norwoodperformance.com/tr_carbon_fiber.htm
Just for kicks, you could probably design one at home for under a grand. Supplies below: $350 used Mondial lid on Ebay $65 Custom Tempered Glass $20 Padding and seals $300 Paint Re-spray to match your car Tools Needed: grinder/cutter, misc items Image Unavailable, Please Login
this has been discussed before, but can't get the thread. My question was back then about engine heat and/or heat evacuation. Mondials need that cover open or you'll need a stong fan/holes whatever somewhere and there is little room. The trunk would be uber hot and we know that area is too hot already. personally, I don't believe the engine displays all that much to go there, and the current looks are better. suggestion: Get a 360/430 or such
Pretty cool, I like it. I would definitely do it if I lived next door to Nino, Mike and a few others.....heck I would buy a beat up one if I lived next to you guys. Imagine.......
If you notice in my design, the glass would just be in the mid section leaving the sides as they are and vented. If you look under the lid, there is already a sheet metal cover almost covering where I would place my tempered glass so as far as over heating, not likely at all. I don't think I would do it, but very well could if I wanted to. Imagination and a can do attitude is a powerful thing! -Mike Image Unavailable, Please Login
i was looking at that lid on ebay, wondering if you would remove the slats from going across the glass, would defeat the purpose if you didn't. The glass therefore would have to be elevated to meet the edges of the slats.
Ted, definitely the slats across the glass would be cut out with the side slats grind back. I'm thinking you would have to fabricate an elevated glass holder to the height of the slate or alil higher to make it look nice. Kinda like the TR version but smaller. Maybe those guys at Norwood Perf can custom build to order. You just have to cut out the mid slats and secure the glass piece to your lid. That would look nice and done right, but the carbon fiber parts will need to be painted the car color to match and only showing the glass to hi-lite the engine would be a cleaner look. Agreed, thats what i was thinking. Maybe Gianluca needs another project You would definitely want to do it to another lid and keep your own stored away so you could always go back if needed. I don't know, sounds like a neat project and very doable. and don't flame me but i'm a fan of accent lighting, i have in on my deck, in my trees, my walkways.... i think it would be neat to highlight the bay with soft cool hidden led's. Nothing ricer just a touch.
Just throwing another idea out there, not sure if it has been suggested before, how about removing the flat cover and fabricating an engine cover along the lines of the 360/430 cover for the coupe versions, a cover that follows the lines from the roof down to the boot lid
That would be expensive and not sure if the small side vents would be enough to vent the hot gases out of the Mondial but it does look cool on the 360. Image Unavailable, Please Login
So i emailed the place that does custom glass covers for other Fcars. This is what they replied: _____________ Hi Ted, Unfortunately we do not make a cover for the Mondial, but thanks for the inquiry. 458 spider now can have a glass lid as well. I like it, i surprised to read that the 458 didnt come that way. Ferrari engines should always be under glass. i just dont think ours ranks aside.. Mike how do you post multiple pictures in one post? It never works for me, i may get one or two but never 10 likes you often do.
Hey Ted, thought you checked out already for the year. I start Friday. If I have BIG money and can afford a 458 spider, I would definitely get that glass lid. I don't think it looks right on our cars. Anyways, about attached photos on this site, click managed attachments, you get 4 at a time, click upload, then you can do 4 more and so on for the same posting, try it. I think there is a limit though, prob like 30 photos or so. Best
Funny how perceptions work .......... from the factory, it could be a "highly desired option". But in the aftermarket, suffice to say, it's questionable. But how do you (we) feel about it ? If we don't like it, we're finished. But if we do like it .. (and the hell with all the detractors), we'll go for it !!!
I thought the glass covers were cheesy when the factory started doing them. The aftermarket ones are just as bad or worse. slats in metal...cool. cheers to differences in aesthetics!
