So the heat's not working in the family car, a 1987 Mondial 3.2. I searched through several threads, and found plenty of good instructions on testing the electronic heater control valve. It's actually similar to a BMW I used to have, so everything seems clear enough. However...how on earth do you reach the valve? I can't get my hand up to pull the wiring off the top of the valve to test it. There are some bundles of black wiring in the way, running side to side across the generally clear path. Perhaps they are aftermarket additions going to the rear speakers, which were in the car when I bought it. I really don't want to jamb my hand through them. Can the glovebox liner be easily removed, or does anyone have any good suggestions for access? I haven't had a lot of time to test different theories, but if anyone has the simple solution I'm looking for, or the word of advice that yes, it is really tight, it would be tremendously helpful. Thanks in advance.

I have always been able to access the electrical connector on the Mondial valve in situ. It helps if you remove the air duct to the right dash vent. If you unplug it, the heat should go full hot, as the valve is powered closed. The typical failure is that the rubber diaphragm inside the valve tears.

You can purchase a Bosch valve repair kit from most BMW or MBZ shops, it is the same as 5 (e28) and 6 series cars from the 80's.
I pinch off the heater hoses, remove the two screws that hold the valve to the body of the car, and then remove the 4 screws on top with a ratcheting 90 degree screwdriver in order to replace the valve insert.

Here is what the kit looks like: http://store.impartsol.com/heatvalsolki.html
I have never bought anything from these guys, just found it online to give you an idea of what it looks like, but you should be able to get a kit in the $30-40 range.

Thanks for your thoughts on this, and the time you took to look up the part. I had an '83 533, and had to replace that exact part. On the BMW it's under the hood on the firewall, very easy to get at. Given the battle I had trying to purchase just the repair kit, which I had the part number for, while the dealer swore up and down that you could only buy the entire unit, it's great to have the source you found. Now I just need to see if pulling off the vent hose gives the clearance I need then stuff my hand up there, hoping no wires break loose.
