Hi everyone. I have had this hot start issue through last year and I thought before I get her out again after her hibernation I'd put a 12v relay in by the starter solenoids. Now I have read all the posts I can, but I can't seem to find anything that tells us which wires are which. My old girl is an '82 Mondy qv euro (I guess seeing as I am in the UK). The wiring loom that enters the engine bay has the following, two yellow and black which connect to the base of the first solenoid, a blue and black and a green that connect to the base of the second solenoid, two yellow which each connect to the top of each solenoid (the is also a bridging wire which just connects to the top of each solenoid). I have already purchased a 12v relay 4pin with the usual 85 86 30 87 configuration and some wire and crimps. Please is there anybody out there who can help me.

all the symptoms are there, before anyone starts asking me about those, my engineer advised me do it next time he was to service her but at £80 an hour or whatever it is I thought I'd do it myself (...if I could!)
    Thank you

Mark, our cars are very similar.
(Also, I have been working on my wiring.)
    What is you car number,,?
    mine is 37067...

    PM sent,
    Email me.
I have your wiring manual in PDF form.
    I can send it.

The wire connections and colors that you are describing seem to be for the ignition coils. The "helper" relay connections for starting are made at the wires going to the starter/starter solenoid (which is located underneath the 5-8 exhaust manifold), not the ignition coils.

Connections for adding the "helper" relay to starter solenoid:

    1. Remove the white wire from terminal 50 of the starter solenoid, and connect it to terminal 85 (or terminal 86) of the new "helper" relay.

    2. Terminal 30 on the new "helper" relay is connected to the large +12V battery cable that is connected to the starter solenoid using a fairly large wire (2.5mm^2 area conductor or 12-14 gauge).

    3. Terminal 87 on the new "helper" relay is connected to terminal 50 of the starter solenoid (where the white wire used to be), again using a fairly large wire size (2.5 mm^2 area conductor or 12-14 gauge).

    4. Terminal 86 on the new "helper" relay (or 85 if you used 86 in step #1) is connected to ground using a wire of 1.0 mm^2 or 16-18 gauge.

This jpeg shows the wiring where this "helper" relay modification was made on 308GT4:

The black wire with the blue terminal is the (new) wire going from terminal 87 on the "helper" relay to terminal 50 (where the white wire used to be) on the starter solenoid (step #3). The red wire with the yellow terminal is the added wire going from the +12V battery cable to terminal 30 of the "helper" relay (step #2). Things are close to the hot exhaust manifolds, so be careful about the wire routing and where you mount the "helper" relay -- HTHs and good luck!

(But I still don't like the added complexity, and think that you'd be better off to determine just what the voltage is on the white wire during a hot "no-start" event:

    1. if it's very low, like less than 8V, find/fix the bad connection between the ignition switch terminal 30 and the starter solenoid terminal 50, or

    2. if it's reasonable, like more than 8V, get a more reliable, generic replacement solenoid, if possible for your location

    JMO)
