I went to drive my 1982 Mondial this morning only to find out that it suddenly had no reverse gear. The car is driven regularly & only sits for a few days to a week at a time. The shift lever dropped into the reverse position in the usual manner with no problems. However, when I let up on the clutch pedal the car moved forward as if it were in first gear. I pushed the car out of the garage & took it for a 20 mile drive. All other gears worked fine, no problems shifting. Even when everything was up to regular operating temp, it still would not go into reverse. There are no unusal sounds coming from the gear box. Any suggestions or ideas? All are greatly appreciated.

Vito, I just went through the exact situation. No big deal. I needed to adjust my clutch and did it no problem. But then I had that exact same scenerio. Apparently the shift linkage is supposed to be tight and precise. Your car is actually going into second gear, just missing reverse by maybe a mm or two. I had to replace a shift linkage bushing. I don't know how handy you are but it I took it to my mechanic who made me a bushing and had it in in five minutes. That might not actually be your problem but it is a shift linkage adjustment problem. My mechanic told me not to try and do it myself because if it isn't adjusted right than you might have to go into the gear box and adjust the "finger". The bushing was under the car and easy to find back near the gearbox. Apparently they wear out and you don't get that extra mm or two you need to catch reverse. If you get in a bind you can take the gate off and get to reverse. Hope this helps, Brian

Start by replacing the shift shaft "SilentBloc" bushing as Brian reccommends.

You can get the OEM metal & rubber ones from Ricambi, etc. or my long lasting Delrin(tm) one, see:

I also supply a 'tool' that makes removing & installing the bushings very easy. See this thread:

Usually replacing the bushing will take care of the problem. If not, then the next step is a shift shaft adjustment. Several good threads here about it.
