My '84 Mondial Quattrovalvole manual lists 5W50 as the required engine oil. Can I move to synthetics? As 5W50 seems to be rare can I use a different rating? Lastly the red low oil indicator on the oil pressure gauge lights when the oil tem reached 100. The gauge itself shows adequate oil pressure. Anyone have this issue and can explain it?

Regarding oil type, discussions/debates for this is no different than sports, politics and religion. :)

Best to try doing a search here on FerrariChat (Mondial and 308/328 forums).

Ferrari dealer filled mine with Pennzoil 5W-40 Ultra Euro Synthetic Oil.

I have a case in the garage, and the Ferrari logo is printed on each container; looks like this stuff is made for Fcars.

I have been experimenting with oil since 1984. It just does not matter. What matters is you have at least 5psi oil pressure at all times. Why do I say that? Back in 1984 I put Mobil I 10w30 in my 1965 Corvair Monza convertible and the idiot oil light came on at idle. I added a can of STP and used heavy oil for the next 30 years until I got around to overhauling the engine.

That was about an additional 40,000 miles on an engine that was worn out when I found it 1979 with way much blow by. But it always ran ok. For thirty years I would change the oil every couple of years. At overhaul time the mechanic told me all the bearings were equally worn and all were at the high side of new production specs.

And more. I ran the hell out of a 1984 Z-28 Camaro [as I had done with the Corvair] and only changed the oil [Mobile 1] every 15,000 miles. Sold it to my brother-in-law at 120,000 miles. No blow by. No oil useage.

Here is the topper. I installed a possitive displacement supercharger on top of a 1991 Lincoln Mark VII 5.0 at 7psi at 50,000 miles and ran the hell out of it for another 140,000 miles. Changing Mobil 1 every ten or fifteen thousand miles. That car would run 130 mph at 3,000 rpm. Finally, at 190,000 miles [no blow by no oil burn no leaks] I swapped out for a 347 Srtoker.

My particular 3.2 Mondial has some oil seeps and the mechanic who did my scattered clutch told me he noticed these and recommended adding Lucas Oil Treatment if the oil got low. It got low twice and I added two Liters of the stuff. The Ferarri loved it.

What can screw up your ferarri is driving it as if it was some sort of 4,500 rpm Wedgewood tea pot.
