Mondial Oil Transmitter or Thermistor?

    I have a 1984 Mondial QV Cabriolet that lives in the 210+ oil temperature range even when the water temp is low (sub 190).

    Does anyone know where the oil thermoswitch is to activate the cooling fan for the oil cooler? I assume its different that the oil temp guage sensor because my oil temperature kicks on fine and is the one indicating that the oil is getting way too hot in town.

    When hot, the oil cooling fan is not on. I did test the fan itself today and it works fine and I have new electronics in the car so I don't think its a fuse/relay problem.

    The parts manual has a "transmitter" near the oil filter and a "thermistor" near the bottom of the engine. Which one triggers the oil cooling fan? And is there an aftermarket equivalent.

    I have a complete set of schematics for this car so I just consulted them. I can probably scan and send this to you if you need it as well. The fan motor should have a connector that has a +12 V on one pin, as long as the key is on. The other connector just goes to ground through a thermoswitch. The Thermistor is for the guage. The thermoswitch is a simple switch that closes the circuit to ground when the temperature hits the right number. Unfortunately, I'm not sure where that thermoswitch is located, so I might not be helping you. I would bet money that you have a bad connection someplace, probably right on the thermoswitch itself. But also be sure that you have +12 V on the black/blue wire on the fan if the key is on. Also, once you find the thermoswitch, follow the ground wire all the way to the chassis and remove/clean/replace. The chassis grounds cause all kinds of issues as you probably know.

    The sender for the cooling fan on the oil cooler is mounted on the side of the oil cooler. Just like the rad cooling fans, you can test this unit with a jumper wire. You say you have "new electronics", does this mean a the updated fuse board assembly? If not, check the white plastic mutli-connectors that plug into the fuseboard for signs of overheating. The connectors and the terminals that crimp onto the wires are available separately.

    That makes sense. I'll jump the switch tomorrow. I didnt see the switch on the oil cooler or any other wires (other than power) coming from the cooler. Is is possible that the switch is near the oil filter? My parts manual shows an oil pressure switch and a "transmitter" near the filter. Could this be it?

    Whats the best approach to replace? Shall I put the car on a lift to get to it or is it one of those take the tire off and remove the wheel well manuevers?

    Thanks for the advice?
