I was told by a sales guy at a Ferrari dealer that Mondial T's were unreliable. So the question goes out to the board: Is that true or merely dealer hype?

I have a buddy that wants one.

The sales guy is right. Only Mondial 8's were Toyota like in quality.

    JK!

Mondial t's are no better (or worse) than any other "pre- 360" f car.

    not true.

many threads on this and especially in the last couple days relating to 'bullet proof 348 engines'.

so, you can be the judge.

if the 'dealer' and I use the term in just default to actually calling him something else, would give specific examples of problems, then such could be addressed.

Otherwise, I know of NO Ferrari dealer who trashed the 'T'

No "Brap", it's not true nor is it "merely dealer hype". I'd say it was an irresponsible statement made by "a sales guy" who probably doesn't even know what the "t" stands for.

BTW, your buddy should get one------but not mine - it isn't for sale:)

    Cheers, Hank

Yeah. That's about what I expected. If I recall, contemporary car magazines trashed the Mondial as well, and that was all BS.

Personally, the ultimate Ferrari is a Mondial t Cab. I can take my wife and my daughter when I cruise. But, I have to go through my Magnum PI phase, first.

    Thanks,

    H

I think Magnum had the Ferrari first, before he was married!

Well, I tried to find someone's that I could borrow before I was married but it didn't work out. Also, never lived in Hawaii. I also wasn't a SEAL. But I was a Ranger and a helicopter pilot. So, it's like TC meets Magnum....

    Hey Brap,

Before you or your buddy buy anything, drive an good example of each model on your radar. Looking at pics, reading reports in mags, being online-------it's fun- it's informative- but the drive tells the true story. And remember, one person's "true story" perception can be very different from another's. Also, with your daughter along for the ride with you and your wife, your Ferrari will be with the "whole family".

    Good luck, Hank

That's good advice for my friend. Personally, I only buy cars over the internet, sight unseen. They arrive in boxes, milk crates and clothes hampers. I never get screwed, because the owner is always straight up: "It's junk and it comes in boxes". If you set your sights low enough, you'll never be disappointed.

Now, can anyone tell me how to unstick a stuck valve in a 308?

    :)

An employee at a Ferrari Dealership said that a Ferrari was unreliable? He should be fired.

I think I have read about every article on the Mondial T and I cannot for the life of me ever recall seeing one that trashed the T version of the Mondial. Correct me if I am wrong. That T was a media darling.

    Hey Buzz, permission granted ;)

First off mine's not for sale either.

Now that that's out of the way I did much research about the t's before I bought mine. What I found out was that the drive trains are bomb proof and you may or may not experience electrical problems now and then. Once those are sorted out it's all good.

    hello,

i'm looking at keith martin's "collecting ferrari" book published by motorbooks intl, 2004. he has a review of a 1991 ferrari mondial t cabriolet. heres an excerpt from chapter seven, page 60. "two franchised dealers (who shall remain nameless) refuse to stock these [mondial t] cars under any conditions because of the fear of what they will have to warranty" - steve serio

those are his words, not mine. but i like the authors conterpoint "so what if you have an electrical gremlin now and then? so what if the top is hard to put up? if you want a stupid, boaring car that never gives you problems, buy a chevy cavalier ragtop" - keith martin.

i'd also refer to forza magazine issue #19's mondial buyers guide. it has the good and bad points and has several expert opinions of the model range.

guess any older Ferrari could be a problem if it's not been loved over the years. Same goes for Jaguar, TVR, Porshe etc....(touching wood) had my QV eight years now, no breakdowns and one or two dramas! Its been said so many times now, any car, get it thoroughly checked and if in doubt....don't!

I stand by the original thread's premis: and the only basic difference between a 348 and Mondial T is storage for people and material.
    The engines are the same.
so, to ask again, if the 'dealer' would list what is a Mondial T problem, then I'd like to hear it. Having one in the garage now, I can tell you they are not a problem except for the freakin' seat belt-hamsters....

The engine is good and mechanics [the motorized self levelers can be overcome with upgrades]

electrical gremlins don't EVEN come close to the 456 models and they are loved and sold all the time.
Top up: only when serviced to keep dust out....NEVER PUT TOP up....it's a dry-weather car IMO, and if driving in the rain...I'd buy the coupe

I know you didn't make these statements, and sorry to say, I don't read Martin...I have read many books on the subject and have owned one for several years. Two 30k belt changes and 'stuff' more to go....

PS: I see you want a "T" on your profile....are youuuuu stiring up trouble

They are not related to the 348 shocks------but are to the 355 shocks (adjustable).

here are the Mondial T pics

I've looked at the TS front and rear shocks for 348 and the drawings and part numbers are looking the same, but I am rushing to Dr's so, unless I'e missed something or someone knows better: there is no difference I can see.

had time to do a quick parts check and 348 vs Mondial T DO have different part numbers. Don't believe they are that much different in design thought from the drawings [see above, basically identical]

T's adjustable shocks work with same actuator motors I believe as 348's

    below is a comp

was trying to do an excel on all the part numbers vs years vs names for the 348 and T series, but don't have the necessary resources to pull it together reliably....will have to leave that to a ricambiamerica or trust-worth dealer to cross reference: Manuals I have are on-line and don't know of accuracy or updates etc.
