I have an '84 Mondial QV with inoperative A/C (and indeed heating in general). I intend to take a look at why I can't get any cold air from the dash vents (I suspect a dodgy potentiometer for the temperature), but a report from a Ferrari dealer some years ago stated the Borletti air conditioning compressor casing was cracked.

I seem to recall reading on the web there was a conversion for the Borletti compressor to a more reliable and cheaper Japanese unit - has anyone else heard of this conversion or can suggest a source who can help?

    Thanks in anticipation!

I recall some discussion on the site about conversions for the 80s cars, take a look in the archives

Search on the AC compressor brand name "Sanden".

Mark, even with the AC compressor out you should be able to get decent heating. If you get neither then I'd check that out first before spending $$ on the pump. Both systems are run from the same control circuitry. Pressing the A/E (or A/C) switch and dialing-up some fan speed and a temp in the red-zone should get plenty of heat (some say too much!!). If not, there may be a simple fix for both issues.

I had the same problem with my MQV air con, not blowing cold. 2 agents checked it out, I even replaced the Bosch control unit in the passengers footwell. But what it turned out to be was the sensor unit behind the dash did not have the pipework connected. Mind you, if your compressor housing is cracked then I would start there.

Thanks for the information. I may leave the compressor as it stands and attempt to get the ventilation system just to blow ambient temperature air - it is the UK after all.

The fan appears to have limited operation - either on or off - regardless of the fan speed knob position. The temperature knob is very loose and I'm suspecting the potentiometer or the knob attachment to it. No problem getting heat BTW - very hot when the engine's up to temperature - just can't get the system to put out anyhting but hot air!

I'll attempt to sort this over the next few weeks, however the imminent fitting of a custom-made stainless sports exhaust probably means I'll be doing more driving than tinkering.

Will post a separate thread with details of the exhaust, the company who are making it and perhaps an MPEG too.

    My experience was this:

I rebuilt the AC system and replaced the compressor with a NAPA compressor (perfect fit) and it blew semi cold. The hot air is what was messing it all up. 2 things to fix hot air.

    1. Make sure that all the foam and rubber seals in the radiator/front bonnet area are sealed. The radiators push hot air directly into this area and make life miserable.

    2. The heater control valve fails and nothing but hot air goes through the core making it hot enough to bake bread in the car.

The heating is easier and cheaper to troubleshoot. Look at my thread on "Hot Mondial" and see what others have posted. Just the seals on the front bonnet made a world of difference. A new heater valve is on the way and I'll tell you how it turned out. A lot of people just close this off with a toggle switch and hide the switch in the glove compartment.

Mark, there's a heater valve (part #38 in the QV Parts Manual heater diagram) under the dash which cuts-off the flow of hot water to the cabin's heater core. It is driven by the temp control knob, among other bits. The valve should be high on the outside wall of the pax footwell but in the cabin (if that makes sense) - it is obvious as a valve with 2 rubber hoses + 2 electrical wires going to it.

The valve needs a power feed to SHUT the water flow, so maybe yours has lost this feed. I'd check the console knobs first however, as they drive the rest of the system.
